Diff's in!

Postby sabretooth » Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:09 pm

And boy is it fun! After sitting around in my garage in a box for about 8 months, I've finally installed the torsen type 2 centre I bought from MX-5 Plus. Just from the adventures of my test drive last night, it's a lot easier to get the tail out, but I can also put the power down so much more easily when powering out of a corner. Doing a single spinner was a frequent thing when cornering with a heavy foot, but now the car just seems to behave quite differently. The first 'incident' caught me offguard, but I know what to expect in future at least. When the back end does loes traction, it does it in a bigger way.

So the night before, I pulled the carrier out, and took it and the Torsen centre to Diff and Gearbox Industries in Wilston. Steve there was incredibly helpful (free plug for awesome service). They checked it out, swapped it over, cleaned it up and put oil in it. $100! Basically what I had was a swapout swapin job - I drop the carrier out, they fit the new centre to the carrier, and I just put the carrier back in! Far cheaper than what I was expecting.

And various \"it's out!\" pics.

In hindsight, a trolley jack would have made the job a bit easier. It'd have been a lot more doable with one person. I'll wait til I find a low profile jack to come along for the right price.

Big thanks to saboteur for helping put the diff back in. It'd have been a much longer task otherwise.

So.. when's the next skidpan day? :D

Cool. $100 sounds like a good deal (I wouldn't want to try to do it).

Yeah, considering it's a $700/$750+ diff centre at stake, I thought I'd let the pros deal with it.

Using the scissor jack was doable solo, it'd just have been much much slower. If Tim wasn't there I'd have been stuck there for at least another hour and a half, I reckon. :)

I had a feeling this would happen after that skid pan day. It was amusing to hear your car's traction going every time the turbo spooled up :D

Oh that was just nuts. The car was a wild horse doing the cloverleaf.

With the torsen in.. can't wait for the next skidpan/LVMA.. :D

At least you know it works after getting crazy sideways in your private testing area.
