SE 6 speed box question

Postby Robbo107672 » Mon Aug 27, 2007 10:54 pm

Hi,
I have a recently purchased an SE and am very happy, it's a bloody nice car to drive. I'm looking forward to a long and happy affair with it.

I have a small problem that is annoying me and hope to get some info from other 6 speed owners (preferably the SE box).

When I change from 1st to 2nd from cold, the change is a bit notchy, nothing drastic but makes me have to think about slowing the change until the oil warms up.

Anyone have the same issue ? Will a good oil help ?, I have done some searching the forum on this and some say it might.

Given the car still has 6 months of factory warranty, I want to make sure that if it becomes more of an issue, I can take it to Mazda. If oil is a good chance of a fix, I'll probably take a bottle to a Mazda dealer and get them to change it...

Any advise is appreciated, thanks Rob.

The NB 6 speed box has not been mazda's greatest accomplishment, being that we are in winter now, its not going to help the notichness when the box is cold.

You'll find a few people on here say that Redline light weight shock proof has helped improve notchiness.

Had exactly the same issue on the NA 5 speed and now the NC six speed. After the first cold 2nd gear change of the day it's fine. I just take that one slowly or double de-clutch and it slips in each time.

The shift in my SE's gearbox is weird...sorta like this:
1 3 5
|_|_/__
/ | \\ |
2 4 6 R

Well thats how it feels anyway. It feels a lot tighter than the box in the NA.

Thanks,
I'll give the Redline a go after I talk to the dealer that I bought if from.

The notchyness lasts for about 5 minutes under normal driving conditions, not just first change.

Also, my shift pattern is fine, straight up an down once I got used to the detents on 5 & 6. Nice tight box
