Age for track days ???

Postby emexv » Fri Aug 24, 2007 1:50 pm

I have been looking at getting an SE or SP for some time but unfortunately left it to long and left my job and therefore lost the company car. I had to buy a family car so there goes the cash.

I still would like to get something to join in with the club and events so am thinking of picking up an NA that I can clean up with my young bloke (can also teach him to dive in it as I don't own a manual).

My question is at what age can the young fella join in the track events? Can he compete on L plates with a fully licenced passenger in any of the events? I think there would be no better education for him to prepare him for driving on the roads.

This is the exact reason I'm buying a MX5 too.

Not too sure on track days but they can get a CAMS L2SJ licence and compete in Supersprints from 14-17 years old.

oh, and the CAMS manual is online if you'd like to read up.

Start here and then check out the requirements at the venue your club uses.

What's your location?

Not sure about track competition events. In those you usually can't go as a passenger during those. But if he gets a CAMS L2S, it should be OK.

Check with AROCA who a common source for hosting driver training events at Winton.

DECA days with the Vic Club will be OK, they're an excellent event for learners.

By the way, when it comes to teaching learners (or anyone), I was always careful to point out that what you learn on the track or skidpan has very little to do with learning to drive safely on the road. In a nutshell, you should never have a car on the road any where near the limits of adhesion or the limits of your talent, as you never know what dangers are around the corner. But it is an excellent way to learn car control in a safe environment (again, not that you should need to apply that level of skill on the road), and an even better way to blow off steam (so you're less likely to misbehave on the road).

track days ( meaning any CAMS or AASA ) minimum age is 16 due to insurance purposes of the track.

as long as he is over 16 & holds a current cams/aasa licence he can go out on his own or at some events with a passenger.

I have my bucks day coming up at Winton on the 20th of Oct & am still looking for a few more people, if he is over 16 it would be a great place to start. have a look in the events section if you are interested.
