Cubby Help Please

Hi All,

The missus wants to buy me a console cubby for my '90 NA6 for fathers' day as below the head unit there's just a flat blanking plate which looks really stoopid. She called a local Mazda dealer and Spare Parts just treated her like an eedjut as she asked for a \"console cubby to fit a 1990 MX5\" which I thought was a pretty precise description of the required part.

Seems there's a couple of variations, this from Miata.net:

Following is a list of various Mazda cubbyholes that can be useful in installations (thanks to Cynthia Paloma). The black plastic radio storage bin/dash pocket/cubby is referred to as a \"Stereo Ornament\" in the Mazda parts catalog.

* FC02-55-235A - 1.5 DIN (same size as stock radio w/cassette). This part comes from the 90 Miata only. Can be cut down to size to fit under a 1 DIN sized aftermarket radio, providing plenty of space and reportedly looks good.
* LA03-55-235A - 0.5 DIN (same size as the space under the stock radio w/cassette).
* The following Mazda part was listed in the Winter 1990 issue of Miata Magazine on page 12: 0000-81-0147 - 1 DIN (supposedly OEM on all Euro-spec Miatas).

The console has a 48mm high head unit fitted towards the top of the cutout which is 182 wide by a total of 120 high which I think is 1 DIN? So that leaves just enough room for the 1.5DIN cubby which according to the Miata.net comment above needs to be butchered to fit.

Can anyone confirm please?

I seem to remember somone fitting a 1.5 din cubby to their MX-5.

There is also another way which a number of of us have used.

The centre console, radio surround out of the 1997 NA is designed for a 1 din head unit, unlike the 1989-1996 surround which is designed for the original 1.5 head unit. So we bought the 1997 surround and then fitted the 1 din cubby, The 1 din cubby is easily available as it fits a great many cars. I got mine from a wreckers. I also know that many car stereo fitters have a plie of them.

Your install looks great, much better than my crock of schtimpy. Trouble is I have an as-new original console that I bought from Rex to replace my current rather shabby one. He had done exactly as you describe - replaced his for the later console. Think he paid $75 for it as a genuine Maz spare part.

No problem...actually thats not mine, I stole that photo from the uk website. Mine is using the 1997 surround and 1 Din cubby, and looks much better than that photo.

I have the 97 panel and it is much better fit. I know it is more money but you will be alot more satisfied with the finished product. If you don't want the whole panel replaced then you will need the 1 1/2 din as Juffa said above. This is providing you don't have the factory stereo anymore. This is the one I used. You have to cut off the top lip (the cut edge is hidden by your new stereo), but apart from that it's very neat.

I'll go with the 1.5DIN and anglegrinder/axe/hacksaw/hammer. At least this way I've got a chance of getting something for fathers' day.

Ended up doing what you did Matty and am quite happy with the result. Bit of a gap around the CD which I'll fill with the offcut when I get a minute. At least I've now got somewhere to chuck my sunnys.

I filled those gaps on the side of the head unit with narrow strips of thick self-adhesive felt (also lined the cubby with this as it stops things rattling around)
