Intake and exhaust are on the same side as the stock engine too (makes it easier). Speedowrks sell mounts etc for a reasonable price.
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.

I wonder if you can retain the PPF?

Jules,
I will be retaining the PPF. Probably in conjunction with a Nissan R200 diff. The speedworks kit also retains the PPF. I have been in contact with Speedworks and am waiting on some feed back regarding their kit before deciding if I should make my own or use one of theirs.

So at the moment SR20det is the choice. I will do a write up of the build with pics for those that are interested.

Hell yes!!!

I wonder if you could get your hands on one that has had this engine fitted, for a test drive.

I'm thinking about the feasibility of a cheap NB8B in Crystal Blue Metallic for some heart surgery.

It would be an SP killer.

Jules,
I might be doing a run of conversion kits. My brother has decided he wants a SR20det MX5 as well and I have another mate who is pretty keen depending on what the final costs are.
I expect my conversion to cast a bit more than most due to the desire to go dry sumped.
I am also developing a brake conversion, just trying to work out if I want to go bigger than 15' wheels.

The engine would need to be newer than the car though...

Or is that just a NSW thing? :?

I was actually thinking more along the lines of Nazda.

SR20 are great as they where produced from the late 80's throught to 2005 in the 200sx. That means that you can use one from any year according the engineer as it is the same engine family.

I believe you won't be allowed to fit anything older than the chassis its' going in to.

Also, to get complaince on this beast, you'll have to have the full emissions package as fitted to the donor car. That means everything between the air intake and the cat converter, plus the ECU and looming.

You might be interested to talk to Vic club member John Pitts - he's been through these dramas before. (Just don't mention his name to VicRoads! )

Matty,
It is not a problem getting a similiar year to my car in a SR20det front cut. I am waiting from confirmation from the engineer on what year model motors are acceptable. It all depends on when the relevant ADR's where introduced. RWD SR's where available from 91 on and my car is a 94.
I also realise I will need the emissions gear off the donor vehicle. I am allowed to change the intercooler piping and fit a front mount intercooler as long as I retain a factory airbox. This I have already cleared with the EPA. The car will run the loom off the donor car with a std ecu. I am planning on buying a front cut and swapping everything across.
I also run a standard MX5 exhaust with cat as my street legal exhaust.
I have done engine conversions before and realise the difficulties that can be involved. That is why I am consulting with the engineer before I buy a front cut or any other parts.
So far my research indicates this is the easiest way to have a MX5 with the power levels I want and have it street legal.
Do you have John Pitts contact details?
Thanks
Jake

I would have thought the electrics would pose the biggest challenge. Dash, A/C, fuelling etc...

Have you got a rough dollar figure if you go with the normal sump? Really interested in this as I am looking at going the avo turbo at the moment and if this can be achieved with a similar budget or a bit more then it could be worth considering.

Not any more. Call one of the club committee, they should be able to help. Bill Campbell is probably the best bet, being the membership person (I assume he still is anyway...)

Jules,
I won't be using AC, my car is a clubman. The ecu on the S13 doesn't run the dash or any of that stuff so will be sticking with standard MX5 stuff there. I will have to rework the standard S13 ecu wiring loom to make it fit better to the MX5 chassis and different engine position. I will use the S13 afm and airbox with custom piping to suit the best layout. Then a front mount intercooler, oil cooler and new alloy radiator should take care of the cooling requirements. Then a new dump pipe that finishes in the same location as my current one allowing me to use my existing exhaust.
Makes it sound simple really doesn't it.

Ben,
Having done engine conversions before and started pricing parts for this one, here's a quick breakdown using the Speedworks fitting kit.
S13 front cut $3600
Fitting Kit with modded sump $3800
Engineers report $1500
FMIC, Rad, piping $2000
Then there's the reworking of the wiring, and heaps of other little jobs which you can diy or pay someone. Either way budget $500 - $2000 in extra bits and pieces, more if you need a new exhaust/fuel pump/fuel lines etc.
Basically it can suck up $10k - $15k pretty easily. I reckon I can dry sump for less $$$ than the modded sump from Speedworks, given there mouts alone are $1500. Dry sumping adds complexity (and power) as you have to run am external pump, lines, and a tank in the boot for your oil.
My brother is getting a quote on getting a custom sump done as he doesn't want a dry sump so I will let you know the cost there.
