Can you prevent a repairer using 2nd hand parts.

Just had the assessor on the phone regarding some damage on the Commodore that was at no fault.

He is wanting to use 2nd hand parts the fix the bonnet and guard, and I have pretty much gone off at him. He is going to call me tomorrow to advise if he can use new parts.

He also tried to get us to pay the excess, even though the other party has accepted blame. I also blew my lid at this news pretty fast.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing. Personally I'm really disgusted. Shannons have never tried this on with Malibu before?

Aami used to have a thing, where if the car was more than 5 years old then they would use second hand panels. Just car do it for pretty much all cars

stand on your dig mate, they can't do it unless you agree to it, OR they can't GET new parts.......as for the excess, tell 'em to get stuffed & that you'll be changing insurers as soon as this claim is settl;ed, but don't tell the knob you've been dealing with, go to the big boss with it

you should not have to pay a thing especially if the other party has accepted fault
I had an accident earlier this year reported it to my insurance company over the phone, gave them details of what happened and the details of the other driver even though they said I was at fault, didn't have to pay excess at all they took car of it I just needed to take it to the assesment centre and the repairer

Can you take the car elsewhere to be fixed? If it wasn't your fault, you should be able to get it fixed where ever you like...

If all else fails - Insurance Ombudmans Service They have a \"dispute wizard\" on their website too, which might help.

If you have a new Commodore, about 70% of the parts are made in either China or Korea, so you'd have to accept Asian parts for it if it gets smashed.

In a nut shell no!

even if they quote new genuine parts the panel beater will purchase supply and fit a second hand part
he makes a profit here

there are a range of scales used in wrecking yards for panels etc
directly under a new genuine panel would be second hand "insurance quality" panels these are usually taken of cars when they come in and are not usually obtainably to the general public.

Also consider how old your car is and to what age the brand new door would be

if you went to mazda to buy a genuine NA door to fit 90 model chances are it will not fit as the dies wear out over time the panels change etc

so a second hand panel sometimes is better than a new one

on the other hand it can go the other way

My brother has a VS series 2 ute that they used a VN door on and it wouldn't shut properly
it got replaced under the lifetime warrenty thingo
but it was a pain in the a$$$

I've seen first hand many times now how panel beaters do jobs'if everyone was privy to how they work then no one would leave cars with them!

This isn't a shot at all the good companies out there though there are alot of good shops out there, they are just tared by the cowboys in the industry!
