Difficulty starting

Postby meanmx » Fri Aug 03, 2007 10:15 pm

Hey guys, Just after some advice. My car has had trouble starting sometimes when it is warmed up. Had this problem since I got the car but it seems to be getting worse lately so I am getting of my arse at long last. I have changed the plugs and leads recently so that is the basics covered. What happens is that when hot sometimes (not all the time) the car will crank normally but wont fire up. Unless I get it a little petrol infusion via the go pedal. Then it will start up and idle roughly for the next 30-60 seconds and be back to normal. Looking for lots of ideas so I can trouble shoot tomorrow. Thanks guys

^^^ What he said :P

Have a look at the coil pack. Make sure the plug is in firmly and is free of any crap or corosion.
Check the ground near the back of the head and also the ground distribution block directly below the wiper motor.

I had accidentally left the ground block loose and had a bit of missing as well as difficult to start.
Huh?

Just thought I might update this. I went round to my good friend Fastfreddy's the other week and we had a look into it. We changed the iridium sparkplugs out and put some Champion gold in. The old iridiums were still good although a little dirty. Changed the fuel filter which was badly overdue and we checked to make sure the leads were good. After all this I still have a problem so we thought it may be the battery so I changed that during the week for that new pulse brand but I am still having an issue so I am after anymore suggestions to fix this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Yepp you've narrowed it down to the leads pretty much.

Cmon fellas. The leads are less than a year old and they are good magnecore ones. Especially as it was doing it before I changed the leads and still doing it after. I need more out there suggestions as I have looked at all the basics already. Nice try though :D

I don't believe pumping the pedal during start will actually "infuse" fuel in an injected engine because there is lttle to no airflow and the fuel system is operating via the circuit operating relay on a 1600 until it starts. You have a 1600 engine don't you :?:

It could be an intermittent ciruit opening relay.

Maybe you have a dodgy injector or two or dodgy wiring to the injectors. Have you had them serviced?

Might also be a problem with the fuel pressure regulator.

Could also be an earth wire problem: from miata forum References are to a LHD car.

Please update us with your investigation results.

Not 100% sure if the 1.6 has a TPS but it sounds TPS related

TPS on the 1.6 is an on/of/on switch indicating idle (on) cruise (off) and WOT (on).

If you also have an occasional 'miss' at idle as well as hard starting it will be a ground issue at either, the coils (back of the head) or the separate ignitor on the inside guard just in front of the brake booster.

Take off the grounds, rub them with wet/dry to make them shiny again, bolt back on.

Unless this has been done already, then ignore me. :)

It was the leads.
