And while we are posting pretty pictures, the ones we built - similar concept. One on the left is by itself, one of right is inside the bottom of the HLA - you can see that the tolerances are pretty fine and need to be machined to the highest standard - hence my previous point about buying a solution.

Sean wrote:On cams - Someone left a message on Steve's mobile today asking about cams and geting a set delivered to Top Tune (apparently it was a customer, not Jason). Problem is teh caller didn't leave a return number!

If it was you, please call him back, you obviously have his number, but he doesn't have yours to call you back!

nah wasnt me sean. i called hi octane the other day but ian was in a meeting. when i bought the tomei 2way off steve he told me he knew of a set of cams that he had gotten organised for him self but were for the BP not the B6 so were just sitting there... ive been trying to get in contact with steve for awhile but once he changed jobs i lost him (if we are talking about the same steve or not i dunno :P i PMed you awhile ago for his number )
but in any case im keen for a set of tomei camshafts and shim kit. i'd love to go the toda's.. but i really cant justify the extra 300 or 400.. especialy seeing as how mild the rest of the setup of the motor is and as everyone keeps pointing out if the motor isnt going to be working above 7000rpm theres no point getting a cam thats worked for an rpm range above that..

irwin83r, mate do you really need cams if you are going to go a decent turbo set up in the future? Standard internals deliver +160rwkw no problems whatsover......i'd be looking to put the 1k+ fitting/tuning costs for cam/cam gears for other bits you are going to need to get the most of the standard engine once you go turbo. I know you like your track days so think = 2 way diff, wider wheels and rubber, alu rad + hi volume thermos, engine oil cooler, extra bracing, brake upgrade, top shelf coilovers, heavy duty clutch etc thats without even thinking of the turbo itself.

To me unless you have bags and bags of money cams on a turbo 1.8 would not be money well spent. Power from a stock engine with a good turbo set up is not to be sniffed at, and at when you are at that point you will be looking for other things - grip, brakes, chassis rigidity and durability before you are looking for another 10kw from cams.

My 2 cents anyway mate from someone who had a 160rwkw NA8.

hey rob.

i know what your saying but the FI race motor is years off.. this motor is only going to run in supersprints and club level events.. maybe a hill climb or two. i'm basically aiming to make the car competitive in supersprints type 2 as i can and then leave it there untill i can afford to start building another motor on the side for FI and when im ready to start racing racing not just sprints. ill de-register the car and build it into a race car. i know its not the most cost effective way of doing it, its the best way i see for me to get as much fun and as much experience as possible out of the one car both on the track and tinkering off the track.

I posted some replies bagging Adrian from Toda Australia. Adrian and I have had some positive discussions. He was man enough to apologise for any miscommunication. So I've edited some of my comments.

I will say again that I think Toda Products are extremely well designed and made. I'm an Industrial Designer by training (but not currently working as one) so I think I understand some of the time and effort going into designing a product.
Current: stock Golf gti mark 5
Gone but not forgotten: NB8A. Cams, Emanage, CAI and PSS9.

Ok mate, you have it under control then 8) The Poncams are a winner. Tomei and Maruha Motors jointly developed those (Tomei Poncam = Maruha F-cam).

Sure...whether you will get back out of the car alive is another matter (don't worry I will ensure that your death is quick and painless)

Im going to be ordering some stage 3 cams for my Clubman, from Integral Cams in US very soon. They are 266° duration, with a 9.52mm lift, and are a full race billet.

Should be good fun to play around with..

So has anyone installed Tomei or Toda cams in an NB8A? Now looking at other options including Fujiracing and Maruha (Toda)....

Thoughts anyone?

Cheers,

$70USD postage to Aus.

Wasn't happy that Tighe Cams wouldn't do anything under $900. They said they will \"weld\" my stock cams for $500 ... yay

Thanks for that, I'll look into integral also.

I'll decline to comment other than to say I've reconsidered supporting the local guys.

I'm currently running about 10mm lift on a std base circle (yes some material was removed from the sides of the head (lifter bosses?) to accomodate the higher cam lobes so I'm hoping I can use the Tomei/Toda shim kits + std mazda shims with the Tomei/Toda cams to get back to stock (or slightly tighter) clearances.

Cheers,
T
