MX5 RACING - 29 CONFIRMED ENTRIES SO FAR!!

Postby mx5racing » Mon Aug 13, 2007 5:43 pm

Hi all,

As you know, for some time we have all be talking about a Mazda MX5 racing category similar to the fantastic one in QLD.

Due to the various classes within a category we have decided to make it an open race with all MX5’s welcome. The idea behind this is to get the cars on the track for some great, budget racing – and build on this to hopefully run a class system at a future time.

Simone from MX5 Mania and I have elected ourselves to organise this and the committee at Festival Sports Cars are bending over backwards to make it happen.

They are prepared to have as many MX5’s as we can gather entered in the Marque and Production Sports car races at the next FOSC event. This event will be at Wakefield Park on 20th & 21st October.

They are also prepared to hold a MX5 only race or races over the weekend.

Keep in mind the Festival of Sports Cars are holding an event at BATHURST on the full race circuit over Easter 2008. If you make it to the Wakefield Park event you will be high priority to get a start at Bathurst. Imagine a Mazda MX5 race at Bathurst……… .

The entries and sup regs will be available shortly through the FOSC website however to guarantee our race we need things to happen NOW!!!!

If you can please email Simone – simone@mx5mania.com.au with a guarantee to participate.

The QLD guys will be down for the Prod Sports round at O/park the following weekend so maybe you can come down a week earlier and join us??? Any of the Mexican clan fancy a run?? The mob from the Nations Capital??

THE LIST SO FAR IS –

I had planned to do this event as we will be at Oran the following weekend. Unfortunately I have to work on the Saturday. I really really want to run at Bathurst at Easter.

I'd seriously love to.

What do I need?

Full CAMS licence, presumably. Hard to get?

Could I run my road car (although the induced panic may cause me to keep it away from the serious members of the pack)?

I'd be really keen as well.

Just need more details on what the car would need, license needs etc.

Sounds like a fantastic event Chris, please let the forum know if you or Simone need any extra help or support. I'm sure there are many here that would love to see this happen.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

What will you need?

1. CAMS Logbook - cost $66
2. At least a CAMS Provisional Race License - about $340 I think
3. At least, helmet, gloves, boots and race suit. To start out, check out ERG, Revolution Racegear, Simpson for starters packs suits/gloves/boot packs. Or, import them from the USA - very good prices at the moment.

The license renewal is yearly, but the rest will last you a long time.

For a Logbook, you will need:
- Approved roll over protection
- Safety switch $50
- Extinguisher $35
- Harness
- race seat
- tow hooks $50
- safety stickers $20

Now, for those of you that think motor racing is all panel beating and breakages - it is not. I raced in 29 races before I had a dented panel. Damage does happen, but most damage on MX5s is cheap to fix, guards and bumpers etc are not expensive.

Entry fees will be around $230 I think which is pretty cheap compared to CAMS rounds.

It is time for those who have always wanted this to happen to stop making excuses, and come racing. Be part of the future of affordable sports car racing in NSW.

CT’s pretty much covered it all.

As he said the initial outlay is a once only cost. We all help each other out during the race weekends and in the rare case you have a failure it is vary rare that one of us doesn’t have the bits to help. The only time no one could help us was at Eastern Creek when I was looking for a large can of oil pressure….

The FOSC event is known as a “not contact” race meeting. This means that contact, including panel rubbing, is frowned upon. We all drive with each other race after race and give each other plenty of room. It is a huge amount of fun and you will not find a better event to do as your 1st race meeting.

Keep in mind to get your PC licence you need to do an OLT – Observed Licence Test. This is usually done through one of the advanced driving schools and costs over $500. If you do the FOSC event you can do it there at no extra charge!!! 8) The last 3 events we have had drivers get their licences over the course of the weekend.

There are obviously plenty of people out there wanting to get involved in racing. Feel free to visit MX5 Mania or us at MX5 Racing at any time. At any one time we have various cars being built up and we will talk you through what is needed. This forum is great as there would be many, many years of combined racing knowledge through various members in every State. Make yourself known and if there is anyway that any of us can assist you, I’m sure we will.

Geoff at Peninsular Racegear is a longtime supporter of the FOSC and agent for REVOLUTION RACEGEAR. Ring him on 02 99072069 – tell him you want to race MX5’s and he will do the best deal he can. They do all your racing gear including suits, helmets, gloves, etc. He also has discounts for NSW MX5 Club members.

MX5 racing will be at Wakefield Park this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Sunday are open practice days so anyone can get on the track. We will be testing on both these days - if any of you feel like a trip to beautiful, warm Goulburn come on down!!

Have current L2S licence, in need of renewal by the end of the month.

So how do I go about upgrading? I get the medical done by a local CAMS approved doctor, and then how would I get the OLT done at FoSC event? Does the FoSC event include a \"motor sport lecture\"?

On the basis that I won't have a CAMS logged car before October that I would be prepared to put on the track, what can I do to assist the event, or the organising of the category?

Let me know Chris, I want to support and promote this!

Here are 2 good options for getting a race car.

You have Brown Davis'd? I think you need to apply for the certificate at time of purchase, and even then, I think BD have to do the install.

How does one go about getting a logbook? I'm assuming there's a cam's form and you have to get scrutineed at an event?

Same deal with the race license, what pre-reqs if any and what would the process be?

How many layered suits would be required?

Does a Brown-Davis bar constitute roll-over protection? Does it make any difference that I have a hard-top?

By switch do you just mean a kill-switch for the battery?

Does it have to be an X-point harness?

What constitutes a race seat?

What tow-hooks are required and where does one get the stickers?

I know a lot of questions but I joined the club to race....I thought I should wait a bit longer (I've not missed a trackday since I joined) but if numbers are important...I'll do what I can to fill the back-field:P

For reference my car is a road-registered NB8B with just headers, exhaust, CAI, ECU and Monoflexes. Next track-day will be the first time I've had suspension and semi-slicks(hopefully LSD too). I was planning on developing the car for a year( I picked it up new years eve), bring my times down and starting in the next super-sprint season. Skipping the brown-davis bar and just getting a roll-cage.

If this is a better path to get into it...I'll do what I can to take it.
