problem, help me solve it

Postby RG.net » Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:00 pm

ok here goes

recently i have been noticing some strange noises from my 5, this started on saturday night, it didnt happen on sunday, and started again today just before i got to work, and all the way home, but it didnt happen on the M5

ok so seeing it didnt happen on the M5 i am thinking it is my gearbox making all those spastic noises (its an auto)

but saying that wouldnt the gears be crunching when it changes into gear?

so i had a toy with the 5 when i got home, to see if i could figure out the sounds, i started with the gearbox, from Park to Reverse it makes a big clunk and then a similar noise to what i hear when i am driving, same deal with R to N, but 1,2,3 are fine :?

i could be way off and it could be my strut brace for all i know, seeing that this noise didnt happen when i didnt have it on, and when i put it on (saturday) the noise occured! (i highly doubt it is this though)

or maybe, just maybe it could be some of my suspension components wearing?, i went over a bump today and thats how it started, got off the M5 on the way home and didnt do it after that :?

i hope its nothing big, i have so much sh*t to fix on the 5 as it is!

please help me guys!

Park to Reverse, or Reverse to D large clunking sounds are usually caused by a stuffed unijoint in the drivetrain. Although, it is not unknown for the diff to make that noise if it is on the way out. It is simply the backlash being taken out of the system.

You are not specific enough about what the noise is to be of more help.

P to R or R to D means you're putting a little torque onto the drivetrain or else changing its direction. You need to think what gets loaded up then. I can think of stuffed/loose engine mounts, loose PPF frame bolts at both gearbox and diff end or backlash in diff, propellor shaft joints or half shaft joints.

I can't figure what the strut brace has got to do with it. You haven't changed the way the engine sits on the mounts in any way when you were doing it, did you? (or else dropped something in there?)

Check your engine mounts aren't cracked.

Auto boxes can't crunch gears, as their layout is quite different to those in a manual gearbox.
All gears are dríven all the time in an auto, and the brake bands just prevent various sets of gears from engaging or disengaging.

Sounds like something is either worn or loose in the drivetrain, so I would be checking your driveshafts and universal joints first, then the engine mounts.

yeahh, i'm getting worried a bit too much i think, it comes and goes, its not the gearbox, i was just freaking out yesterday  but there is some kind of squeeky noise coming from the drivers side, happens randomly, but not on the freeway :?: maybe something is vibrating off bump and is causing a noise =/ will have a look tonight, thanks guys
