Roll bar installed

Postby Fatty » Sun Jul 29, 2007 8:26 pm

spent a few hours today fitting this to the car. big thanks to phil / manga-blue who actually did most of the hard work. got this from RobE here on the forum, very happy with the price and the quality of the bar. he did a great job wrapping it up and freighting it to me too, no scratches or anything, it looks brand new! it is similar to the brown davis but has an extra bar across the bottom between the 2 towers. it also has a camera mount.

i had to remove my rear deck speakers, as they sat too high and would foul the bottom bar. so i'll need to get a new carpet as it looks kinda fugly at the moment... but the car feels more taught and rigid and a lot of the old squeeks and rattles have dissapeared.

after reading about bigdog's recent accident, i am very happy to have the added safety of a rollbar on my car now.

oh and one more thing, i got a free windblocker as part of the deal! the plastic windown now doesn't sit flat, it sits up against the bar and actually does a pretty good job as a windblocker! excellent

Looks good James. Looking at the height I'd say no hope for a hardtop.

Mine fits under the hard top. Just depends if Mr Brown Davies got his measurements correct.

yeah thought so reddie.
stm - mine's not a brown davis. it sits a bit further back so yeah, won't fit a hardtop. manga-blue thought that it'd be possible to tilt it forward tho, by eg by putting some spacers under the bar at the back.

seeing as how i don't have a hard top this is all academic at the moment anyway... i'd like to get one in future tho maybe.

Guys and girls, I am in the process of getting some EPDM compound tubes for the upcoming BD rollbar installation at MX5Mania.
I need the forum's help to determine the diameter of the rollbar steel tubing (the black powdercoated steel bar variety)
Just want to double check with Josh's figure of 1.75\" (45mm).

I came across a tube sample with the following sizes:

Inside diameter - 45mm (1.75\")
Outside diameter - 58mm
Wall thickness - 6.5mm (they are spongy, so they should compress under a hard/soft top)

This EPDM compound is the stuff they use on cars/trucks/boats trimmings.
Resistant to ozone, UV (won't discolour), flex cracking and has good memory retention (will spring back to shape after compression).

If this stuff is good, maybe a group buy is in order?
Comes in 2m long tubes that you can cut to size.
