Any Benifits with POD style oil breathers?

What are the Pros/Cons of the pod style oil breathers?.. are they purely cosmetic or do they serve a purpose?..

I thought these were illegal, as every car has to have PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) which means the engine \"breathes\" into the sump.

Is this right, or am I thinking about something else?

The 'advantage' is that no oil vapours enter the intake, hence providing cleaner air for the engine to use and so can perhaps be tuned a bit more reliably... only a real advantage on highly strung cars, which are tuned to the nth degree to get every last little bit of power out of the engine.

Yes, they are illegal if setup just as a filter off the rocker cover, but there are some catch tanks/catch cans, which can be setup legally.

as above the oil vapour lowers the effective 'ron' rating going into the engine. if you are tuned to the max on the highest ron fuel then these vapours could be the difference between serious hp or serious engine failure. I have one for asthetics only. It is much more closed then that though.
