That's rotten luck Uncle.
Don't feel so bad about it though, many have done much worse, like a friend of mine doing his first oil change and after undoing the sump plug and draining the engine, decided it would be a good idea to start the engine and give it a big rev to get rid of all the old oil.

BIG MISTAKE!!!!

The engine was fried within seconds, and in those days, a new V8 engine cost a lot more than a good used MX-5 engine costs today!

Thanks AJ.

I'll be following up with Richard to see what he's got available and what will fit - I reckon I'll come out of this with a bill less than $800 incuding beer and wingz.

And a newer motor, and the chance to do more polishing.

not to mention the opportunity to build a proper turbo engine outta the old one  ................ :? jen doesn't see this right???.........i'll not get slapped around or anything next time she sees me........RIGHT???

Well I'll be willing to lend a hand if required UA... :)

As for what might have happened, it could have bent a valve and jammed it open which would stop the cam, and engine turning. It might be worth pulling the head off first to see if you could get away with just some head work... On the cylinder head I mean, I won't comment on the other head which needs work  :P

Gonna polish the head?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

In a slightly more expensive way than intended, the water in the inlet trick is cleaning UA's engine

I mean, where else do you get to 'clean' an engine with water and take 100k kms off it's life?

Still don't think I will try it though. :D

I'm able to give a hand. Do you have a date yet? If it is just a bent rod maybe you could replace it by just pulling the sump off? You could use my parents shed where we did red5's motor swap if you want?

I hope it was from your rainwater tank, internal cleaning of engines isn't allowed under level 5 restrictions! :D Wouldn't want to cop a fine on top of all this!
