Stock Engines and Turbo Kits
Hi guys and girls,
This question may have been done to death already, but trolling through posts and searches, bores me to tears... so here it is.
1. How do the stock Mx5 engines(both 1.6 and 1. handle bolt on turbo kits??
- how much boost?
- what is safe?
- what is not safe?
- does a 1.6 handle this better then a 1.8?
2. How do stock engines with lots of KMs handle bolt on turbo kits?
- i.e. 200,000kms.
Mechanics that I know and have spoken to about this would tell me off for thinking about this, but so many people here have done it.

my 1.6 is a happy 125kw atw on the mazfix dyno @ 7psi
but I have not had a great deal of time in the last two years to tinker with it so it has stayed stock boost
I would go to 12 but I havn't got round to setting it up so will do so when i can fly new parts in under the radar for the new motor
not sure on the 1.8 someone with a 1.8 would be able to tell you

If the engine has 200K on it, I wouldn't go over 8lbs (about 0.5Bar), which is about what an SP has as standard.
Higher boost may upset the rings.
A fresh engine should handle up to 12lbs as long as it doesn't ping.
If you are prepared to put in good rods and pistons, then you can go for 16 maybe even 18lbs if you de-compress the engine a little.
On 8lbs, around 150RWkW is easily achievable, and believe me, it will really go!
Once you've dríven a turboed 5, you'll never want to go back to NA one.

A guy on the US forum ran 18PSI for 2 years on a bone stock engine. He drove it when the air was cold, had a good setup and a great tune. On a hotter day it pinged once and it was time to throw the engine in the bin.
You can root your engine on 6PSI if you run heaps of timing and no intercooler. Having seen UA's car I'd take Ryan's offer any day of the week if I had my time again. Looks the goods!
My car has 225000 on it now and doesn't blow a wiff of smoke, on 8 PSI.
I need a better fuel pump before I go higher than that.

My 1.8 has ~120k kms on it, makes 160rwkw, and has been running 15psi for ~30k kms of that. It has been turbo for ~45k kms. It runs 15psi rain, hail, or shine. In temps ranging from 5C - 38C.
I have run it as high as 20psi for a very short time, set it on 18psi for a while but decided drivetrain life was more important to me than the extra power (atm anyway).
I do have an EMS on the car though. I believe with a good map you can run high power levels safely as long as you don't get any detonation.

Sadly, I am a slack shite and haven't been on the dyno. I hope to get real figures within a month. I'd be disappointed with less than 105kw atw. (SE power)
