Turbo Blanket

Has anyone fitted one of these into their turbos? What are the pros and cons of fitting one?

I'd like to contain/lower the temperature in the engine bay and this might be the solution.

Currently I've got an ACL Ceramic Heatshield fitted (as manufactured by the guys from ACT). Great product and does wonders at reducing the heat, but I seem to be getting some metalic vibration from the bracket (or the ceramic shield) at higher revs - I don't know how to fix it. So I'm considering removing it and replacing it with the turbo blanket.

Any comments?

The instructions on the one I was looking at suggested removing it at the end of each drive to stop the retained heat cooking the turbo bearings. Sounded to hard to me so I went with Russell's heat shield. The bottom heatshield bracket that attaches to the dump pipe broke on my car which was causing a few rattles. I manufactured a new one and it's been fine ever since.

It's easy to bend Hammer, though be careful, the edges are sharp. You might be able to loosen the attaching bolts and bend/move it around a bit to stop any rattles, assuming all the brackets are still in tact.

Thanks Garry, I might have to fiddle around a bit more to source the rattle. It's just annoying - the rattle. I hate things that rattle in the car.

As Garry eluded to, they can trap the heat in around the turbo and cause more harm than good if you're not careful.

Maybe you should ad a cooling system to the blanket so you won't have to take it off all the time. :mrgreen:

You could always get the lot HPC coated, with Hipercoat Extreme. Its meant to work wonders on lowering engine bays temps on turbo cars..
