NA headlight replacement

Postby Shadow » Mon Jul 02, 2007 8:16 pm

well my NA is now blind in one eye. and sicne it has the sealed units (yes, import), i'm planning on bying a new pair of lights.
my question is, any suggestions from those whove been here done this before?
i'm looking at getting the newer style brighter ones (not blue though, pain in the arse to everyone else on the road).

are the H4 globes you see in the junkmail catalogues the same as the 4000k ones people have mentioned before? (can you tell i know squat all about lights :? )

and also are there any i should avoid completely?

much appreciated.
Cheers,

Hi Hayden,

I just removed the black plastic from around the headlight (4 screws) which allowed access to the front screws. After removing the front ones I could lift out the whole unit and remove the H4 bulb from the back. Does your bulb not lift out at all?

A replacement H4 bulb shouldn't be more than $10.

Cheers,
Tim

Hella make a complete replacement set for them, and it includes bulbs

As fuzzlet mentioned Hella make a 7 inch replacement headlight kit, including H4 bulbs. You will notice a huge improvement over your sealed beams. The kit is around $110. Most car part stores should be able to get you the kit. If you buy the kit you can quite easily change your bulbs if they blow, or you want an upgrade. An alternative is to buy a set from a wreckers. 7 Inch headlights were standard on many cars, and therefore should not be hard to find. Just remember on most cars the lights would have been subject to stone chips and general wear and tear, and so the light output can be affected. Not so much of a problem with pop up headlights.

When fitting ensure you put the headlight on correct side as the light pattern is different between left and right to ensure you are not blinding on coming drivers.

Will the Hella kit or those bling ones improve the Australian delivered lights too? My low beams are REALLY ordinary, I'd consider them dangerous.

Yeah they make a huge difference.. I didnt get the bling ones like lowmiata, as the backing is plastic. I wanted metal backing as im running 90w low beams, with 100w high beams. The bulbs tend to get very hot, and i didnt want anything melting on me.. :?

Cibie do a 7in reflector.

If you think the Hella is good, try the Cibie - it's better. :D

7in was the popular size for 4WD (Patrol, LandCrusher, etc.) for many years. Thet is why there are some very good replacements out there.

So did you get the Cibie or Hella ones? It's nice to know I don't have to put up with the standard lights. 8)

Sorry Shadow for totally stealing your thread!

well i did a change at lunch time yesterday. since i had to do a bit of driving last night i bit the bullet and grabbed some from autobarn.
their nardi ones, not the best or quite what i was after but still a hell of an improvment on what i had (even when i did have two lights). cost around the $100 mark.
i might upgrade them again to something i actually want/like later on but for the momment they do the job.

and definatly not a shmick looking as lowmiata's.

thanks all.

Damn those crystal look ones are almost tempting me to ditch the low profile lights and go back to normal...
