I'm after a GPS unit. Can anyone recommend the best one to get, aside from the TomTom?

I've used a few and I settled on the Garmin StreetPilot c510. RRP is $698 but I've seen them as low as $548. It finds locations quickly and responds fast to alternative routes. It also has speech to text which is way better than just plain old \"Turn left in 300 meters\". Instead it says \"Turn left into High Street in 300 meters\", you may not think that makes much of a difference but when you use one without then use one with you'll understand the benifits.

i've been using a Navman since they were introduced, & will be trading my ICN630 in on the new N60i Navman.....brilliant machine

I personally have been using the Navman. I have a NavMan iCN510. I've had it for over 2yrs.

It's quick to pick up the satelites, and very accurate on directions. It's touch screen is also superb. The \"Birds-eye\" view is awesome.

However, the iCN 5 series is now an old series of GPS. But even so, they can still hold their own if compared to new models from other brands now.

The new generation Navman GPSs, not only look good, they also have a more powerful electronics/CPU. Meaning much quicker map refresh rate. I like the new N40i & N60i series.

But no matter what brand you end up getting, make sure you get the latest maps.

Very easy to use, compact (fits in your pocket), touch screen, sirf3 GPS receiver, Bluetooth ph compatible to work as a handsfree kit for your ph, pronounces street names, mapping for EU incl UK, USA, Canada, NZ, S.Africa... A few other features incl mp3 player and picture viewer.

Like all Garmin units, very good quality. Oh, and did I mention easy to use?

If you wish to have a GPS buy a Garmin ;)
If you need to use it with a PC, buy a Garmin ;)
If you want to plot routes, tell the GPS something, buy a Garmin ;)
If you want a hamburger with the lot and expect a big burger, buy a Garmin ;)


If you wish to know where you are, so you can get a ham sandwich, buy something else.

Me, I'm soon to be the daddy of a Nuvi 610 and a Nokia Navigator, first one is because I want a GPS and second one is because it's about the only 3.5G phone that may do what I wish from it

get anything, but dont get a Nokia N95... it brings you to the no through road...

I wanted something small and compact that didn't stick onto the windcsreen or the top of the dash so I ended up going the PDA option and got an I-Mate PDA-N with an inbuilt GPS reciever. It's not much bigger than a Motorola Razor phone and fits onto my mobile phone holder mounted next to the stereo. It's a little slow to initially find the satelites but once it does it locks on really well and recalculates very quickly. Being a PDA I have the option of using any GPS software I like. At the moment I'm using Tom Tom and it's terrific. It also has a headphone jack so I can plug it into my head unit and being a PDA it also holds my music and can be used for appointments etc.

when buying mine, i tried a few and the tomtom was easily the quickest, and easiest to use..
navman was the worst imho.

I have Tomtom mobile, on my Nokia n73 with a gps reciever. Its great as it uses tomtom maps, and because it your mobile phone, you carry it around everywhere with you..
