Speedo problem

Postby Stu » Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:15 pm

My speedo seems to jump around sometimes whilst I am doing around 60km/h.

To clarify, If I am doing a constant 60 km/h my speedo will go up to 70, flick back to 50, up to 70 then maybe 0 then back to 60 all in the space of a couple of seconds. It only seems to occur in the first few km's of driving.

Is this a common prob? Do I need to adjust something, get mechanic to do it, or is it the start of a more serious problem?

That's just the way you drive mate  . Sorry not much help. The only thing I can think of is that the connection into the gearbox or back of the dash cluster may be loose.

hey stu, im not sure if they are electronic or mechanical, but if it is a cable drive (mech) you may find that the inner cable is dirty or on its way out... if someone can tell me what type they are im sure we could find a fix for it ;)

or like ben said it could be the way you drive

Car is serviced in 700kms, may just get mechanics to figure it out.

Have speedo on GPS for letting me know an approximate speed to fall back on.

You'll find the gps will be jumping all over the place as well unless you warm up your leg muscles before you get in the car instead of waiting until the heater warms them up. In this sort of weather it's called shivering

Has this sort of thing happen in the '03 Tribute and a new battery fixed the problem.

You could try looking at the wiring at the gearbox. The speedo is electronic and the speed sensor is on the gearbox. The plug could be loose or if your car has had the clutch replaced the wiring may not have been secured properly and it could be flapping around causing an intermittent fault.

JSE, I will return and post solution once I know.

Have been working out at a clients site recently, and they have the most ridiculous speed hump that I can only go over at crawling speed. Now wondering if I did any damage bottoming out on it.

Think I have fixed this problem.

The problem went away after I took some dodgy LED globes off the car. Just a though but maybe the speedo wasn't getting enough current?

Hi Stu,
Interesting, I would have thought that LED globes would use less current. There has been a number of recent posts on the big forum around the in-correct fitting of bulbs which caused weird things to happen.

Mine does the same and I am yet to find two minutes to fix it. I have a link from the big forum that tells you how to fix it however I don't have the link handy on me right now. Will post it up later.
