Wideband Oxygen Sensor

Hi All,
As you may know, I have bought an E-Manage Blue for my 2001 model. I'm yet to wire it in though, I'm getting eveything prepared first.

I have read that a wideband O2 sensor is needed for proper tuning as it gives a much wider range of ratios than the stock one which apparently stops at a certain point and the ECU goes into open loop mode.

What wideband sensor is OK for the Emanage Blue, cheap and where do I get one?

The US guys like the LC-1 sensor but this is very expensive and I don't know if it's even available in Australia. Alternatively, is there an car that comes standard with a wideband that can (or can be made) to fit?

I have a WB02 unit in my car for auto-tuning purposes. Not cheap, but good stuff, with the electronics made and supported out of Canberra. Check their website out.

I am running the 2A1 unit, which has just been replaced by the 3A1. I also have the digital display so I can keep an eye on the AFR. The display is just a comfort thing in that I can see if I go into a fully lean situation under boost.

The tech edge unit is a great unit.

I have a 2C0 with display output.

Seeing as the e-manage will accept the signal, won't I just need the actual sensor plugged into my exhaust, then hook up the wires to their respectable locations?

I just need a really simple, hopefully cheap wideband sensor. The emanage will handle the rest.

On that website for tech edge, the sell the sonsors only for $104 including postage. If I can't find any cheaper (even willing to go hardly used second hand), i'll just order it from them.

I don't believe that it is as simple as that. You need the controller to convert the output from the 02 sensor into something (voltage) that the ECU can read. I suspect that the Tech Edge 2J1 unit and associated sensor would give everything you need. ==>> http://wbo2.com/2j/default.htm for around $253 + GST

Aaah crap. Thans for your help Juffa, I understand now.

That's way too expensive for what I mistakingly thought would be a <$100 buy.

I'm just going to have to fiddle with the values gradually on whether i'm seeing lean or rich. No doubt seeing a linear value with the wideband rather than on/off with the narrow band would be far better to tune though. It's just going to take more of my time. Oh well.

I've just read Boags' write up (linked below) and at least I know I can get a heated narrow band one cheaply.

Stock NB sensor has A/F range of 11 to 17 (or there abouts) which will be more than adequate as I'm nat aspirated. So unless I do something drastically wrong, i'll stay within those ratios.

Hey Beverly,

I believe you can input the wideband signal into one of the emanage inputs, but you have to monitor it as a voltage and not as an a/f ratio.

You still have to run the stock narrowband sensor for the stock ecu though.

Yes its expensive (700 Aus delivered for the full kit I bought) but you are getting a lot for your money. With it being a full data logger, inbuilt warnings you can set up (very fast and furious I know :mrgreen:

) its own software and most of the electronics located in the cable its a really nice piece of kit. Jason Hay from top tune is a big fan after use with his Nissan GTR (600hp). Since I may end up playing around with boost with my FFS Kit it was a good investment. Even if I don't it still is.

I didn't even bother asking them how much because I fgured it would have to be more expensive than innovate selling it themselves direct.

Since you don't have FI yet Bevan I don't know whether I would bother with something this full on. Mania suggested a basic wideband was in the order of $3-400 aus including gauge.

If you are planning on going turbo sooner rather than later however then maybe the LC1 would be a good investment. I guess its price would eat into your budget for that tho

I have a lab grade autronic AFR metre, you are welcome to drive up my way and we can spend some time tuning with it...

Na, don't continuously need it. I haven't got a turbo or anything and I've got nothing else to do on my car after this (I don't think :lol:

) so once it's tuned, i'll just set and forget.

I may take you up on your offer! Very generous.

I've still got to get the bloody thing talking to my laptop first though. :evil:

No worries, gimme a bit of notice and it wont be a problem.

I've got 2 so shouldn't be an issue making sure I have one here to use, I've made attachments for both units to be able to power themselves from a cig lighter so no need to do any wiring really - can run a 0-5v output direct to the ECU too if that makes it easier?
