Bob Jane wheel and tyre package

I just saw Bob Jane selling 15\" wheel and tyre packages for $649... seems very cheap.

Has anyone had any experience with RJR wheels? Are they reasonable quality?

When I was looking for my current rims I was tempted by the price tag of the Bob Jane specials of the time. In the end I couldn't get exactly what I wanted so I went elsewhere. Lucky I did because within a month, every Swift, Carolla and Sirion I saw had those same rims... Very glad I passed them up.

You also get the worst tyres on the planet.

Have I put you off sufficiently? Please, if you do get the rims, upgrade the tyres.

I'd hazard a guess that the wheels will be heavy and basically completely unsuited to a MX5

I nearly bought them a month or so ago when they were $699. Tyres are Bob Janes own brand. Yokohama C drives were to be an extra $200. Finished up buying very light Starcorp mags from Tempe tyres in Sydney, and C drives through my brothers tyre shop. Total cost $1100 but very very happy with them. Starcorps only weigh about 5kg each.

They are re-branded Kumho tyres. "Economic High Performance" tyres.

We just put Kumho tyres on a new mini cabroilet, to replace the run flats. They have given us another 2 seconds around phillip island track. They did cost more than BJ'S tyres though.

Kumho's are awesome, though I'm not so sure about rebranded ones. Kumho SPT is what kula is running i think?

Don't go for a tyre and wheel package....if you do...I reckon you're better off heading to MX5 Mania...they've got some decent wheels for reasonable prices, just them if they can hook you up with some tyres too as a package.

yup, i run Kumho Ecsta SPTs, and for a street tyre, i cant fault them, great value for money...

Kumho's also make some serious motorsport tyres, i really want to try the V70As next, a WRX shod with them won the targa tasmania, and i reckon that means heaps, and i know of a lotus elise with a K20a, which runs the V70s daily, and loves em, he also does low 1:06s at wakefield on em.

bob jane have been around for ages, and i personally would feel a lot better buying wheels from them then smaller newer places, if anything does go wrong, (unlikely) i bet the service would be better.

most cheaper wheels are made in china, and i think someone the size and stature of BJ, would have found the best quality they could get for the price, rather than just finding what's cheap, popular and available.

I think that sterotyping is a bit dangerous. Bob Jane outlets are franchises and while they have service standards set by BJ they can differ.

Bj's in Geelong are fabulous;good prices and great service back up.

My mate pur C drives on his 5 and about a year later had a flat.Fixed, no charge"you bought the tyres of us".

Have had no problems with BJ in Epping after having 3 cars worked on by them. Can't say the same for Beaurepairs in Somerton.

Yeah but I know a couple of people that had T-Mart franchises that got bent over by head office. And the problem with these wheels is that head office and RJR are responsible for them... Same people that had AIR renovated and if they can't even redevelop their own multi-million dollar property properly so that rain water coming down through the new mounds doesn't destroy the track, then how much care have they put into making sure the wheels are strong, light and made to the correct tolerances? I'd sooner trust secondhand Japanese wheels

I guess I'm just toying with the idea that I can get a set of 15\" wheels and tyres for only a little bit more than a set of 14\" tyres for my stock rims.

I hear what you're saying about the quality of \"made in china\" wheels and tyres.

I actually went in to the local bob jane (taren point) to see both the wheels and tyres.

The wheels are not noticeably heavier than any of the other (more expensive) wheels they had on display, but I'm no engineer or metal urgist and don't know how they compare for strength. If they are heavier, we aren't talking much. (I was only able to compare 17\" wheels, because they are all that BJ keep for display)

The tyres are aparently \"rebadged\" Kumhos (as previously mentioned here), and are directional, and made with a medium-hard compound... so they will wear \"economically\". I assume this means they'll be pretty average on the track, but at least they'll be a slightly lower profile than the current tyres, so should afford better traction (due to less wall deflection whilst cornering) than my current balding bridgestones.

Also found out that they are almost totally out of stock, so there won't be too many swifts/lancers/whatevers running around with them on.

I'm very tempted to give them a go just to see what they are like, but something is holding me back... (It could be the voice of reason).
