TIEN Flex

Has any one used read about compared the tien flex (not the ss) if so what are your thoughts

Over the course of the past 8.5 years I have owned three NA, with the following spring/shock combinations.

1. King/Koni
2. Mazdaspeed (Eibach)/Koni
3. Tein Flex (current)

I found the king/Koni combination to be very stiff and too much of a compromise for day to day driving. I did play around with the adjustment on the Konis but was never 100% satisfied.
The Mazdaspeed/koni combination while better that the king/koni setup, in that the ride was more compliant, was still a compromise.
Now that I have the Tein Flex installed (without the upper pillow mounts) I am very happy. I love being able to adjust the ride height without reducing the suspension travel and being able to make that ride height adjustment for all four corners in around 40 minutes. While I have not actually done it, I believe that the coilovers will allow for easy corner weight balancing.

Tein flex use a twin tube shock, which are not very sophisticated. Try to find some coilovers or shocks with a mono tube shock. They are able to have much softer high speed bump and and still have stiff low speed bump giving great resistance to roll without making the car feel too stiff over bumps.

The Flex in old skool style twin tube will be more than suitable for a car the weight of an MX5. I've had them for 4 years now first the NA race car and now on the SE. In fact, when I first used them everyone else used konis, now, everyone uses Teins.......they have far superior low speed damping to any other shock I've used on an MX5 and the range of adjustability makes them a very, worthy investment. A shocks role is to control spring oscillations - not to limit roll - that's what sway bars are for. If you can afford to, the monotube has benefits but really, how many people could really tell the difference...... 8)

Which is why they are called dampers, not shocks, shock absorbers, shockies etc. The springs are really the shock absorbers.

I have just fitted a set of the Mono Flex(really nice bit of gear) on the race car,havn't dríven on them yet but am doing oran park next weekend so will have some feedback then.

All this talk about damper has made me hungry...time for a snack...

A shocks role is to control spring oscillations - not to limit roll - that's what sway bars are for.


anti-sway (remember the anti! ) bars are nothing by springs themselves 8)

Firmer dampers do give the \"impression\" that they reduce roll. I assume it's just because they seem to control the rate at which the car actually rolls.
