Ok update, Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner will dissolve the seal on the TB valve but just the front clear ones. It was fine on the black seals on the back of the valve. Idling at 1500rpm & wouldn't go down with adjustment, had a go at making a new seal on front using gasket silicone which got idle down to 1000rpm but it whistled.. Probably could of eventually got a perfect idle if I kept playing with it but got a used replacement instead. Thanks Sean
So a working used replacement, from a late model NA6 & it didn't have the clear seals on the front, just the black ones on the back.

So Mazda or the manufacturer Denso must have eliminated the clear fronts for whatever reason. It idled fine (but 1500rpm on a cold start that'd then goto normal when warmed?, my original didn't do that when it was proper), so I gather the TPS must have been adjusted at the factory to compensate for the absent clear seals. Probably cause a lot of people ended up dissolving the seals accidently... It'd seem late NA6 onwards TB's don't have the clear seals on the front TB valve?
Having gotten all that out the way & now idling well again, Subaru's cleaner works quite well for decarboning an engine & makes noisy HLA's much better too
New Edge Sport oil 5-30, filter, new NGK plugs & a cleaner engine = awesomeness.

Kinda like water injection?I'd hate to accidentally put too much in and hydraulic lock a cylinder...

Hey guys,
I had to bring this back to the top. Last weekend with nothin to do, I decided to have a look at the intake chamber. Opened up the throttle valve and I can see that the inside was all gummy and black. Pulled out the old carby cleaner (CarbyClean by Chemtech) and with a long straw nozzle, blasted the inside.
I used a piece of rag to mop up afterwards and the result looked good :-)

The car started fine but ran rough for a while and blown blackish smoke. Reved it up for a while and it then idled smoothly. It wasn't until I took it out for a spin that I realised how smooth and how willing it was to rev. Man, if I knew it would have made that much difference, I would have done this earlier. No BS, this is the easiest most rewarded maintenance I've done on this car!!.
I'm sure this is not new to anyone, but I still can't believe that it would make so much difference!

Oh i see it now.
I've just pulled off my TB and upper section of the intake manifold, there seems to be alot of oil hanging around the 4 butterfly valve... A catch can would eliminate this but what are the consequences of having reduce the amount of oil going into the intake besides cleaner oil free air.

none as yet - looking for a white NA8

Not sure, but I'm waiting for someone to give us an explanation as to why there's an improvement.

By cleaning out your throttle body, and intake manifold, you are cleaning off all the grime, oil and dirt than has gathered over the years. Cleaning all of this off will get you back lost power, and response from your engine. The cleaner your throttle body, and Intake manifold, the more (and faster flowing) air you can get into your engine.
I have been following this thread for a while, and i finally decided to get up and clean out everything. I got a can of carby/throttle cleaner and went to work, my t/b was still pretty clean as I only cleaned it a few weeks ago. upon removing my t/b and having a good look inside my intake manifold, it was nearly black. I gave it heaps of cleaner and let it soke in for a few minutes, then gave it more to clean off all the crap.
I then put everything back together and started the car, it wouldnt start the first few cranks, but eventually it started and ran feral for about 20 seconds, and then returned to normal idle. With the car running i removed a vacuum hose the went into the intake, and sprayed more carby cleaner in while increasing the idle with the throttle (it will stall otherwise).
After I did that a few times I put everything back to normal, and took it for a drive. The car revved a whole lot better, and I have back a bit more power.

I know if you do it properly and clean behind the air bypass adjustment screw it will fix up the idle dip on a NB8B. I haven't noticed any improvements other than a more consistent idle though.
