NC Rattles
A bit of a heads up to anyone with an annoying rattle/squeak coming from the rear centre console area of their NC. I demolished Kuntry Kuzzin's NC on the weekend to track it down.
I found 4 possible trouble areas.
1) I think KK's rattle was caused by the rear speakers rattling against their mounting brackets. There are only 2 screws holding each speaker to their bracket and it was possible to move the speakers side to side on the unsupported sides of the speakers, if that makes sense. Mazda should have added a gasket under the speakers or chosen speakers with 3 or 4 mounting screws. I added some double sided tape to the rear of the speakers and reattached them with their 2 screws.
2) Another possible cause was where the speaker bracket mounts to the rear support beam. There were sharp corners on the bends in the bracket that were squeaking against the support beam but a fair bit of force was required to cause the squeak. I isolated the bracket from the support beam with a cardboard gasket just in case.
3) Another possible cause was the 4 white clips holding the vertical rear plastic trim to the rear support beam.
4) Mazda US has released a TSB indicating that the noise was coming from loose screws holding the rear console latch. This wasn't the cause of the noise in KK's car. The screw's weren't mega tight but there was no play in the latch to cause any noise.
To get the rear trim piece off the car is fairly straight forward. It requires removal of the centre console which was a bit of a pain as it has 2 very firmly fitting covers over the screw holes. Once the screw covers were off the console it was only a matter of removing the 5 screws used to attach the console, the wind blocker, the front facing plastic roll bar trims, the sill plates, the seatbelt covers and a lot of clips holding the rear trim piece on.
I got everything back together and his car is rattle free. Bliss!
Hope that helps someone.

Thanks for the \"heads up\" Garry. I believe there have been some instances of the soft top down latch rattling too. Got any progress pics?
The only rattle mine had was at about 3000RPM with the soft top up (a most rare occurrence unless parked). It is caused by the poor fit of the roof latch cover . A bit of black stubby cooler foam fixed that until the 10,000km service.

A $50,000 car (sports or otherwise) should have trim and other parts that don't rattle. My NA didn't have any trim rattles and our poverty special Astina doesn't rattle.
I reserve the right to criticise the build quality of my car(s) or abysmal dealer service/repairs/maintenance without being compared to some tosser from the other side of the Pacific.

Just to add to that, and so everyone knows. AJ's mx-5 is also the fastest MX-5 ever built. SE's and SP's should look out!

A huge thank you to Garry for having the patience to have a look at the problem.
As for being negative about build quality or whatever, I think it isnt unreasonable to expect any car not to have noises like parts are about to fall off.
Now that one is fixed the rest of the rattles and vibrations I am happy to assign to the \"thats life with a convertible department\".

Bring out your dead.
Max started to rattle after the weekend of fun we just had. I blame the rough NSW roads.
The rattle/creak/squeak noise was coming from the rear panel area.
Pulled it apart this morning. The source of the noise in mine was caused by the pad on the rear of the centre cubby latch assembly rubbing on the cross beam. See photo. A bit of greasy stuff on the rear of the pad shut it up. Greasing all the other latches/pegs/clips had no effect.
I didn't remove the centre console though. There was enough room to get at everything by just pulling the panel forward as shown in the photo.
