gear problems

After a spirited drive in the mountains last night with no inital drama.

Into the city for a coffee, attempt to reverse car, resulting in car shuddering.

Unable to get out of reverse. Turn off engine. Start engine, reverse ok.

Drive home, attempt to put car into fifth gear on highway would not engage.

Engine oil checked, levels fine, though car is due for oil change.

?? Diagnosis, Check change gears with engine off, reverse with difficulty, 5th gear no go at all.

Can anyone recommend best person in Brisbane to fix problem.

This is an NB8A with 5 speed for anyone who might be able to offer suggestions.

Did you try to double clutch? That works for me when a get a stubborn gear. Usually happens with 1st or 2nd for me though.

Leaky slave?

Just thoughts...

Hmmm, got an NA8 five speed I had in my car for a while before it suffered the same symptoms, namely not able to get into 5th or reverse. In my case an inspection revealed the turret had no oil, which I am presuming has managed to kill something in the shifter mechanism (probably a collapsed bush). Probably worth checking your shift turret oil level there Ron.

I would like to say I managed to solve the problem, but I haven't, the box is still sitting down the side of the house waiting to go to a gearbox repairer.

In any case I would also check the clutch slave and master, which usually leaks inside the firewall, and is easily replaced by any suitably qualified contortionist.

Double clutch no go for fifth gear.

When reversing feels like clutch is slipping but not in other gears.

Checked all of the above. Only thing found was that there was insufficient oil in the shift turret.
Adding oil didnt help the problem.
Its off to the mechanic tomorrow.

Could be the ring and pinion in the diff, same happpened to me last year after thinking it was the box for about 18 months.

ring and pinion? and it only had dramas in 5th and revers??

im having probs with getting to 5th, reverse isnt perfect but its ok once its in sounds similar slam?

I had problems slotting 3rd and 5th, then on track it lost drive in 3rd, that was 2 years ago, around 6months ago i was sure i needed a new box, even told the mechanic, turned out to be stripped teeth on both ring and pinion...worth a check first, see if there's any bits of metal in the diff oil?

Does the gearshift lever move easily when the engine is off and the clutch is disengaged? That is, does it have the same \"feel\" going into 5th/reverse as it does going into other gears under the same condition? If not, i.e. if there is resistance, there might be a problem with the backup light switch. It is mounted on the driver's side of the tranny, and its actuating rod presses on the 5th/reverse shaft. If its rod is sticking open against the shaft, that might be causing the problem. First of all, do the reverse lights work? If not, that might be a clue.

Another possibility is a problem with the lower nylon bushing at the bottom of the gearshift lever. If it is damaged, you could get that problem.

You should be able to access that without removing the transmission.

In my particular situation the initial problem was that car was stuck in reverse.
On reversing the car would shudder.
It is not doing that now. Reverse can be engaged quite easily, no double clutching and 1-4th gear engage easily .
Its now impossible however to engage 5th gear.
My mechanic says something about dog ear, selector and synchro being the problem.
Anyway when box is out I am going to go and look at what the exact problem is .
