Yep, the first few laps I took MX5 lines...

Bad idea.
It got much better with a different line, but I'm nowhere near good/consistent enough to remove all understeer. It catches me out if I'm not prepared for it... My driving style is prone to understeer actually, I guess I need to spend some time with an instructor at a skid pan day to fix it... *HINT HINT*

If you want to run a LSD you usually need to run a tight clutch type set up which are pretty expensive and need to be rebuilt, stick in a spool and you never touch it again.
Torsens and Gurus work fine in road cars...
Hey Brian

- what Lou said is correct. I had my guru re-built before I sold it because the heat had annealed the spring washers and it had stopped working properly - again, race cars are far more severe on components. However, Guru (or whatever they are called now) did provide excellent service and looked after fixing it when it did play up.
A full spool locks both axles together - like a real racing car!!!!

I vote for the commodore diff.... when I was driving it on the street with the spool in it you wouldnt even notice or hear it unless you were stopped and turning into a car parking spot.
Bit more complicated to set up I guess but once done its something you can forget about. I have had it in the car for over 2 years now and havent had to worry about it once.
The real test will be to see if it still works when the new motor goes in.

Hahahah its not the hardest diff to fit in there but it is alot of work!!! Refer to this website:
http://www.geocities.com/crash41301/Basically you need a big huge mount for the front of the diff (too small and it'll rip apart and punch a hole into your fuel tank) cusom tailshaft, and mount for the ppf if your still gonna use it. The you gotta look at the axels, so you got custom hubs and some custom spacers to keep the drive shafts in position. This will aslo widen the track a little.

I looked at an mx5 down the coast with a 13b in it for sale once,
it still had the PPF! but only the first 600mm of it! there was an L bracket off that and that was bolted straight to the floor of the car!
(it still had 1.6 brakes too)!!!

It depends what you want the car to do and what your prepared to settle for..... but yeah, it can be very costly

lil_mike wrote:How much could a 1.8 diff actually stand up to? the car will be in the vicinty of mid 200kw, and i would probably get a torsen.
There are a handful of MX5s in Australia making over 200rwkw that are stret dríven on non locked 1.8 diffs, at least 2 ofthem have seen numerous hard launches at drag racing meets and a few track/skidpan days.
Both have had the diffs out recently and no noticable damage.

LOL, I thought I was being generous sharing the information
In about 6 months I will probably sell my IRS setup and go to a live axle.... not that it will help you too much now.

Now that you mention it, Matt at MR ENforcer quoted me pretty much the same price to install commodore IRS in my MX5, we ended up fitting the 1.8 instead.
Bad news mike - they are in SYdney...
