Oxygen Sensor - problems

Slugold, thanks for the heads-up on the part number. I bought the same one from Repco for the same price today.
I checked my sensor a couple of months ago with no error code. Did the same test today and found code 17 i.e. oxygen sensor(output not changing). Lately, I also notice my car seems not to accelerate as strongly as before and it has been gulping fuel like I own an oil well.
I don't know how you could have changed the sensor in such a short time. That place is cramp. When the exhaust was still hot, I touched the sensor base with a candle to weep some wax on its thread. I then sprayed some WD40 onto the sensor base and the little bolts on the heatshield. When the motor was cool enough, I removed the air box and the heatshield. I used a big shifter to undo the sensor. It came off real easy.
The supplied heat shrink is a tad too big so I slipped a smaller diameter heat shrink before slipping on the bigger one.
Once everything was in place, I disconnected the battery to reset the ECU. After a short drive, I rechecked the code and all was well. There is a noticeable improvement in acceleration now. I'm anticipating better fuel consumption too.

NGK make a complete replacement unit, right down to the correct plugs to fit into the wiring loom without drama. Sold under the brand of NTK.
Last time I costed one it was $80 walk away for a single wire NA6 unit.
Part number OZA401-E20 with the connector, OZA624-E1 for universal without the connector (this one was probably a bit cheaper).

OBD2 first came to Aus in the NB8C cars, ie 2003 onwards. However the ECU checking thingo that your friendly Mazda dealer has will pick up more faults than the flashing LED will pick up on pre OBD2 NB's.

You'd hope it would pick up more faults than the flashing LED then wouldn't you.

A BMW mechanic was showing me how the BMW \"ECU checking thingo\" works once. It plugs into the car diagnostics plug and checks ALL the electrical circuits, even little things like the horn if required. It can activate all the electrical circuits from the comforts of the operator console and is so clever it can even determine if a light globe is blown. It was a pretty impressive bit of gear but had a very impressive price tag to match.
