Yeah that gusset is one of the extra pieces of sheetmetal that was added to the NB to increase rigidity. That piece sits astride the tunnel and is welded to the rear firewall, and there are 2 similar pieces that also go at the front of the tunnel, under the dash.

When Mazdaspeed built its line of refreshed NA6s, the NB gussets were one of the updates that they did to every car.

I don't know what the point of that gusset this at the end is. Looks like it goes where the boot and fuel lid release is... :?

Looks like it resists the tunnel/floorpan twisting relative to the rear firewall.

There's a few pieces you can weld into the NA to make the body more rigid like the NB.

I'll try and find some more pics when I have some spare time.
