LUG Nuts for the MX5

Hey Guys,

In case you're wondering, all MX5s use 12mm x 1.5 thread lug nuts.

I'm shopping for a set now...









At this stage I'm probably leaning towards the RAYS ones for my new Watanabes

I was looking at the rays nuts for my new wheels earlier in the week... There not cheap though, and im sure the weight loss wont make a difference...

but they do look cool...hehe..

I have those Blue Work RS ones. They are sweet but getting a bit old. I'd love a new set but have no idea where to buy some from? Raymo do you know?

I have the original Watanabe Wheel nuts on mine, with watanabe locknuts and key. I didnt want to sell them, as i love them. I heard they are pretty rare too..

Can someone confirm that the socket required to remove standard mx5 wheel nuts is 21mm

im 99% its 21mm.

rays are 19mm

My std ones are 13/16\" but I think a 21mm will still work

Internal allen key heads will protect your wheels from damage by errant sockets & wheel braces - they came std with my wheels and take a 12mm allen key. Not sure where you would buy them but I'm hooked on the idea.

I have a very nice set of 'tuner nuts' that I had to buy for my Sparco wheels. I got them off eBay for around $80 delivered to my door. They will be less now given the OZ v US dollar is better.

All four nuts weigh less than one stock steel nut.

The 7025 alloy of aluminium mine are made out of is quite high in the shear strength - less than steel, but more than all other alloys of aluminium. 7025 is an aluminium and zinc alloy.

Mine use a 12mm hex to torque them up. Using my small breaker bar (9\") and the hex key, I am physically unable to torque them beyond the recommended amount. Considering most folks cannot torque a stock wheel nut to the recommended amount with the factory 'spare' tyre bar in the boot of their car, I'm not too fussed about that.

Rattle guns or other power tools are death on aluminium nuts.

If you really want the duck's guts - go the titanium ones.

Here are the Watanabe ones i have.. They look different to the ones you pictured Raymo..Mine look more like Aluminium than stainless.

They come with a locknut, which is like a sleave that slots over a special nut, and you need a special key to open it up..
