Sticky? How To: search Aus-CarTalk using Google

It is quicker and allows to search as far back as you like. At the moment, this forum only allows you to search threads up to a month old.

In comes google. Just click on This Link and wait for the page to load.

In the search bar at the top of the page, enter your search query after \"site:.aus-cartalk.com\". That's it!

It's quick and very thorough.

So how does that work? Google can access data that forum members can't? I'm confused. \"Please Explain\"?

All the forum threads are live on the internet. You don't have to be a member to access them, just to post in them.

By searching only the pages @ .aus-cartalk.com you are searching all the threads.

Ingenious, thanks Bev, I didn't realise you could search on a particular domain! It beats the hell out of the search function.

It actually doesn't access Aus-CarTalk at all when doing the search. All information is cached on the Google servers, so when you do a search, you are searching all the info on Google. It pops out a summary of the page in the search results, again, all stored on the Google servers. When you click on the link that you want, you are THEN taken to Aus-CarTalk.

SO, when searching, there is zero load on this forum. It is very quick, and will take you back as far as you want. So it helps out both ways. It gives us an efficient way of searching, and doesn't place any stress on the forum.

I'm pretty sure Google allow a search box to be integrated into forums free of charge. There would be a line of code to input into the page.

It is how I found Sean's post on emissions and engineering. My search liked this:

site:.aus-cartalk.com sean emmissions

That way, it searched this forum looking for any post with \"Sean\" AND \"emmsions\" in it.
