Mystery undercar rattles

Postby EGG80X » Sun Apr 15, 2007 7:37 pm

There is this annoying loud metal rattling sound everytime i hit a pot hole or a bump, sounds like a sheet of metal rattling...

I am still in a process of elimination..... tighten bolts and extra foam on the cai, wedged tight the radiator fan cover, also checked the header's heat shield and in the process of removing the heat shield just above the cat convertor

BTW its a NB8A

anyone else had experienced the same problem?

.....could be your brake pads moving around in the calipers.

I have had the brake pads moving. See if it goes away under brakes.

I have also had my speedo cable come out of its clip that caused a rattle.

Yep, same thing with my NB8A

I've looked at just about everything and cant find out what is causing it, but it does sound like its coming from the rear of the car somewhere

Its not the exhaust or the heat shields

Rocks caught in the exhaust heat shields?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

my car has the same rattle, it's the rear brake pads.
if you have a look you will be missing the retainer clips for the pads.

Or if it's an NB8B the retainer clips have fatigued over time and they no longer do their job.

thanks for the pointers guys

wot a nightmare, drove me nuts!!! couldn't find the source of the problem all weekend

so I drove upto mania last night and Dave and Daniel were pretty helpful!!! took us a good hour to found that rattle it turns out to be the rear muffler heat shield, it was probably cracked when my car was rear ended and it wasn't repaired.

Once again BIG THANKS to Mx5 Mania

Can you buy new pad retaining clips if they are destroyed?
I've got the same sound on my NB8A but havn't had a chance to search the for cause of the sound.
