NA radio sizing

Postby phaedo » Sun Apr 08, 2007 12:11 am

Just been having a look on MX5parts website, and come across this: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/119
Although it states for UK style, am I right in my hope that it is the right size for ours here too? Helps to know I can get the right cubby when I do finally replace the radio with something fancy.

It's just a std DIN size. Alot of people use a univesal pocket which Aerpro sell which is the same as the one which came in the ford festiva and alot of mazdas. I just used a universal 6 cd holder to cover up the hole with something funtional.

Being sold specifically for the mx5 that pocket MAY fit easier but I personally wouldn't bother, I had no trouble fitting what I got.

Or if you're real keen you could make an aluminium plate to put in there to hold a couple of extra guages and a starter button like I have seen done before :D

The standard radio in the early NA MX-5s is actually a 1.5Din size. If you replace the radio with a 1Din headunit you will need to do one of two things.

1. Replace the centre console/radio surround with one from a '97 MX-5 as this is designed for a 1Din headunit and 1Din cubby hole pocket.

2. You will find the cubby hole pocket is 1.5Din in size. Should save you money over buying the centre console/radio surround and you end up with a bigger cubby hole pocket.

Its cheap from the usual sources, and looks good to boot!
MX5-less; need another!
