bye bye 5th gear

Postby irwin83r » Mon Apr 02, 2007 5:57 pm

well....
ive had a slight odd feeling when ever i changed into 5th for quiet some time... kinda sounded like the syncro or what ever not working.. if i matched the revs right it would slot in nicely still... BUT! the other day driving home from sydney the car would no longer go into 5th..

so.. should i get the gearbox rebuilt or buy a new one??

also would it be worth while doing clutch/flywheel upgrades while its all out as the car has 150 on the dial and a bit of heavy drving in there?

not worth rebuilding the box at all! unless its only the 5th gear syncro in which case it shouldnt be too expensive.

Clutch, i'd go for a heavy duty organic face clutch if you want grandma driveability and arent planning on more power. Otherwise belive it or not a ceramic puck clutch is very easy to live with! I have one on my car with a super heavy duty pressure plate. Its a 4 puck sprung center - although i think a solid center would completely eliminate the little shudder i get on occasions - like reverse.

My mechanic once told me that a new gearbox cost him $500 and he had a turbo'd MX5 which used to rip it to shreds about once every year. He reckoned that a $5000 gearbox would have handled the power but he figured that it was cheaper and easier just to replace it every year.
