Just ordered Toyo Proxes 4

Not quite by myself. From the original Toyo T1-R thread, a number of us have all experiences the same characteristics from this tyre. Only bigdog, brother Dave and Red Baron have loved them.

First impressions are that they grip very well but there seems to be a delay for lack of a better word between the grip of the tyres and when the car reacts. The tyres grip but the car seems to continue as though it feels like it is going around the outside of the corner until the car is set. It also seems to take a litlle while to come out of the set for a corner as well.

Hopefully this should sort itself out after getting some good heat through the tyres and get rid of the squirminess once they have been scrubbed in a little. I think a couple of firm not hard driving should do it.

Was just about to ask the same question! As you know, I just had mine fitted. I took them through the paces through some twisty backroads and found them very squishy on the sidewalls at high speed through corners.....even a little scary! Have them fitted to standard 16\" NB8B rims (205/45/16). Tyre guy recommended 36PSi front/rear. I tried 38PSI for the return trip and they seemed a little better, but still dont feel as good as my old warn out Turanzas!

Any suggestions!! Maybe have them too hard! What are people running at the track??

I found the T1R side walls a little squishy but that makes them more predictable when they're going to slide.

Interesting - Toyos have a reputation for really soft sidewalls...

Just trying to give some fellow MX5ers all the information to make their own judgement on before the big purchase. It’s possible that the 17”s show up this characteristics more than the 15 & 16\" wheels. Just another thought.

I qualified my report as i only have old and very slippery PZero Nero's as a benchmark, I've not dríven on Michelins or Dunlops. That said, mine are also an unusual profile - 215/40x16, and while I don't notice any squishiness, it may be the profile that helps here. Grip wise though I find them excellent, certainly good enough for the money and wear (30000km and counting). If Michies are a similar price when replacement time comes around I'll give them a go and give you all another report. Or you could all shout me a set now if you'd like...

Marty and Fleery were posting after their initial fitment so it'd be interesting to see how they've found them now that they've bedded in. Okibi seems to love his now and Matty was just making a generalised comment on Toyo's which could have been any tire, road or track.

I dunno maybe car setup, suspension condition/mods, tyre storage conditions before purchase and a lot of other variables come into play...I just know that mine don't behave the same way yours do.

Maybe the Camel is just an exceptional car!

I'd say a lot also has to do with different driving style Craig.
Everyone Loved the old Yokohama A5396.....I thought they were the biggest piece of crap. Thats why i ended up going the street compound semislick type tyre.

There is always going to be different opinions on the same tyre. some Love them, some hate them.

tyres are such a subjective thing. Even with the most acurate & precise report.....even like CB's.....sometimes, it takes a drive on the actual Tyre, preferably in a car thats similary set up your own.

If ever i pick up another 16\" OEM wheel i't will be a tough choice. In fact it was way to tough recently. So i went back to what i knew would work for me. & that meant, parting with the rimms I loved most. *snif* .....(can you hear the violin?)

well, as a comparison bigdawg, yesterday on the run home from a club run, there were 5 cars in our group going over Mt Glorious, a red NA8 running near new Pirelli dragons, two black NB's running whatever they were running & two NC's shod with Michelin PP1's, it was absolutely pi$$ing down, a virtual river running down the edges of the road & water sheeting across the road, i was running tail end charlie & was watching a slippery dip show from the cars without michys, NMX516 was in front of me & REALLY struggling, his tyres weren't getting rid of the water & the back was twitching around more than a cheerleaders backside & he was getting push through on his fronts (he was turning the wheel, but the tyres weren't buying it) JBT running on pirelli dragons was having much the same trouble & the young lady in the other black NB was even worse off...........for mine, the NC was sticking to the road like that famous brown stuff to a baby blanket, no slip, no skip & no aquaplaning, in fact if you judged it just on grip, you wouldn't have known the road wasn't dry except for the wipers struggling to flog the water off the screen, the other NC looked as tho he was having no problems either, obviously we weren't going hard at all, but it certainly showed up a glaring difference IMO.............you get what you pay for..............the michys are just as awesome in the dry, & i'm expecting a safe 35 - 40k from them............BTW, according to garry & a couple of others, the PP2's are even better.........

Actually I found wet weather grip was the worst thing about the PP1's. The PP2's however are exceptional in the rain.

BTW, how on earth do you get 35-40K km out of a set of tyres? If I get 25-30K km I'm happy. The poor old OEM Turanzas only lasted 19k km.

Cornering at less than 160kmh is a start, and not leaving licorice strips at the lights helps too

Well, I got them fitted on Saturday. Done about 250km on them and am VERY happy with them so far. Haven't gone on a spirited drive yet, i'll wait for 1000km to be on them first.

Just punting around to and from work on bend I like to have fun with, they grip better than my Kumho V70A semi slicks. Granted, the semi-slicks wouldn't have gotten up to temp on day to day driving and are better on the track.

The Proxes4 seem to dig in and grip and spit me straight out the other side. On camber, off camber, tight corners, change of direction (round abouts) they seem realy solid so far. They're not even worn in yet so i'm looking forward to their life.

At $130, I'm very happy.

Either I need a suspension upgrade, or I need to learn how to drive. I find the Proxes 4's only marginally acceptable in terms of grip.

I had an alignment done at the same time. I haven't crossed over lines or had to use the other side of the road yet.

They do screech a bit on the limit though but still haven't under or oversteered. I don't push it too hard on the road though, just push it enough to have fun, which I suppose is still fairly hard.

I said "if you do it for $560 then you have a deal". He agreed straight away and tyres have been ordered. I made sure they were made in Japan and ALL TOYO TYRES SOLD BY TYREPOWER ARE MADE IN JAPAN!

how can you tell if the tyres are made in china? does it say it on the tyre?
