NA6 alternator belt (toothed, non-toothed?)

Postby SuperMazdaKart » Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:17 pm

Ok, just bought a Bosch belt 13A0890 for a change I attempted to do & soon gave up on..

But anyway, this new one has teethe on it & the belt currently on the car doesn't. I've got some photos of other NA6 engines where the belt is mostly the non-toothed version but saw a couple with the teethe so does it matter at all?

The problem is not the toothed part of the belt.

The problem is that the Bosch catalogue consistently lists the WRONG belt for the NA6.

Take back the 13A0890 and ask them for a 13A0915. Tell them that the Bosche catalogue is wrong and so in good faith you mistakenly bought the wrong part.

I could not get an 890 belt on with the engine sitting on an engine stand. You have no hope with it in the car.

Actually I think the 855 is right....don't quote me though. I don't recall any problems with the A/C, just the important one.

ok, returned both belts. got the 13A0915, which still has teethe & switched the A/C belt. had another look under the bonnet & the a/c belt currently on the car is a 4PK845 (though, didn't see any brand name on it & is made in USA as opposed to the Bosche at the store made in Singapore) so thats what i got. hopefully they're the right ones.

Yes they are V belts.

They are just the slightly newer design which has 'teeth' on the inside to allow more flexibility.

Bosch call them 'cogged' belts.

probably also so they can use the same product on more vehicles to cut manufacturing costs more.

also had another quick look through the catalogue, seems the 323 & Capri B6s have different belt numbers..

to be installed within the next fortnite, just waiting for a rad hose to arrive first.

The (teeth) are actually not teeth because they dont engage anything on the pulley. All Vee and Micro Vee (multi ribbed belts) belts are dríven on the side walls of the Vee section. The Teeth are merely cut out sections the manufacturers put there to, yes, help the belts have more flexibility on smaller pullies but also provide a fan like cooling effect to keep both the pullies and the belts cooler for longer life.

The tension you put on a belt wedges it down into the pulley and the wedging affect is what then drives the pullies and belts.

Sorry I sell Belts among other things and have had it dríven into me so many times over the years.
