Hi everyone, got a bit of a problem.
I've got an '89 NA.
A few months back I noticed it was getting more and more difficult to get a connection on my electric windows switch. I often had to really jam the button hard to get the window to begin moving up or down. Once the connection was made though, the windows had no problem at all moving. So it's not a problem with the motors.
Soon enough the connection was almost impossible to get, so I assumed I needed a new switch! My dad took a look because he wanted to double check that it definitely was the switch before I ordered anything. He unplugged the electric switch cables from where they connect near my CD player wiring etc, and with a little power tester thing (cannot remember the name), it showed there was no power. Just to make it clear; there was no power on the cables that eventually connected back to the fuses.
None of the fuses are blown either.
To get the window back up, he had to bypass that cabling entirely. I tapped a wire onto the battery and he made a ground, and got the window back up via a direct connection from the car battery.
This is all very weird. The electric switches begin to die, then my dad disconnects the switch cables from the plugs in the console/dash of the car, and there's no power there and even connecting it all back up, the switches are completely dead now.
Sorry if I'm rambled, we're both just a bit confused on what the hell has happened.
Has anyone got any advice? Or anything we should look for or test? I'm just going to have to go to an auto electrician eventually to get this sorted out!

See if you can borrow a switch off someone just to confirm whether it is the switch or the wiring somewhere else in the car.
