Rear window replacement - Melbourne...boat plastic ok?

Postby sambojoe » Thu Mar 15, 2007 2:10 pm

Got a good run out of the original window, but it is brown and cracked now. I have removed the window from the car so its all ready to go.

Does anybody know of a cheap place to get it fixed?

I have had ranging quotes from $80 - $240. I like the idea of $80 but the guy said it was boat plastic and may yellow over time...anybody tried the boat plastic in the window?

Thanks!
Sam

Hey Sam welcome to the obsession :)

Most (if not all) plastics will yellow over time. You have probably have to replace the whole roof before you replace the window for a 2nd time.

There are plastic polish products that will clear up the window and keep it looking good for a number of years, but eventually it will become brittle and crack. If you do replace it make sure it is water sealed otherwise it will leak.

Sam , I am amazed that your quotes are so cheap!.To do a really good job the roof has to come off(although there are other ways but not as good)and the figure I have always worked on is $300.

I have found Olympus in Fitzroy to be excellent(Spiros 94891860)

Thanks for the replies!

Yeh, it turned brown in the top quarter, then i put the roof up one day and i noticed a big hole looking back at me! I've had the hard top on for most of summer :(
The roof looks pretty nice apart from the window!

pcmx5, I have read that the real cost is the labour with fixing the window, so i've already taken it out. Just need somebody to cut away the crap one and put in a new one....and make it water tight! I'll ring Olympus, and see what they'll do it for.

I hate yellowpages online so much btw, its freakin uselss!!!

And i guess for $80, if it is crap, well i cant really complain too much - and then i can just get it done again!

Will let you know how it turns out.

Cheers :)

I am pretty sure that $80 will get you a good quality replacement if they don't have to remove and refit. They did my mates for $300cash, perfect job ,incuding R/R.

Hey MonSqueek,
I will check the bulk fix price for ya! However, is your window still attached to your car, would you want them to take it off and put it back on?......as much as I would like to offer to do it for you.....it was a horrible experience I do not wish to repeat!!
I will 'try' to make a few calls today...and post what i find out....just a little busy at work at the moment :(

Roof is still on... Would like to get some help to get it off if I can, But If not I suppose I'll have to pay the labour costs cauz I have no idea where to start.

It took me and my brother about 3 hours to take it off I think. But that includes a trip to the shop to get more drill bits. and we didn't end up using the drill bits because they were usless....we started getting a bit violent with the roof and we got there in the end...just not sure how good its going to go back on!! ;)
