strange noise

Postby mossy » Sat Mar 10, 2007 6:55 pm

Went for a drive today after finally doing the 6 speed conversion, I noticed a funny sound coming from the engine bay almost sounded like a steam train and the sound got faster the harder I went. At one stage it started to sound rattly so I pulled over and had a look couldn't find anything, then when I took off the rattle didn't seem to be there but the steam train was, any ideas?

Head gasket or loose inlet manifold bolts/gasket if it's related to engine speed

The sound isn't that loud but its more like tss tss tss tss tss if that makes any sense. The only thing I could seem to find wrong in the engine bay was cracks in the timing belt, I'm sure that can't be good.

Just had another look under the car and found the right side halfshaft leaking oil, dunno if that could be causing it

Does it make the same sound when in nuetral? You sure it isn't coming from one of the front wheels? Could be something simple like a brake dust cover or even one of the wheel weights could have shifted and is rubbing (seen that a few times).
