Hi Fatty,
Attached are four pictures: engine bay, exterior, ECU and DFA & Bipes
install in glovebox. The car belongs to a member of our local MX5
club. When I first drove it, it really sucked, it lacked power and
would ping heavily at 4,000rpm!!. My standard tune NA would have
blown it away!!. It was a stock Greddy turbo installation with the
addition of a MAP sensor triggered 5th injector. The owner (now a
great friend) trusted me enough to allow his car to be a Guinea pig
for me learn and experiment with a turbo engine and EFI tuning.
Over a period of time (and as the both of us grew more confident) we
progressively added stuff beginning with a Bipes aux timing
controller, then the DFA. This was followed by an intercooler with
custom 2.5 exhaust. Lately a set of 1.8 injectors were installed. As
you would expect, after each mod and re-tune, the car was much better
to drive. Currently the car is fantastic. It pulls hard and smoothly
from idle (thanks to cams from an auto MX5 and very fast spool up)
and goes cleanly up to red line. It is a very reliable daily drive.
At stock-Greddy 0.4bar boost, it has 145hp on the rear wheels. This
should, IMO, go up to about 160 once the original manual cams are
refitted. The cams from an auto engined MX5 in NA application result
in about 8 - 10hp less over the manual camed MX5. So expecting 15hp
more in boosted application seems realistic .
The reason for putting in cams from the auto in the first place was
because the car was very sluggish off the line. It behaved like a low
compression, old fashioned turbo engine. Now, as things have been
progressively sorted out, the manual cams will go back in, probably
this Saturday.
The aim now is to get rid of the 5th injector and optimize off-boost
A/F ratios which are pretty rich at the moment. This can only be done
by fitting an FMU to give me some control over fuel pressure in both
boost and off-boost conditions.
Take care and best wishes
David
