I was suprized how cheap a non-genuine fuel pump was $138.33 considering it was of a higher flow rate than the gen pump. (probably better suited to turbo/SC applications I guess.
Probably easier to go for the gen mazda part in the long run, plus you have peace of mind.

Ok, here goes with a DIY fuel pump replacement -
First a warning or two, you will be dealing with fuel and electricty, so NO smoking and disconnect your battery and ground yourself before starting this procedure.
First to gain access to the fuel pump by rolling up the carpet and removing the tin panel held on with six bolts to gain access to the fuel tank -

The fuel pump is located under this panel -

Remove the electrical connection and the fuel lines going to and from the fuel pump, then undo the screws and carefully remove the pump from the car. The filter on the bottom of the pump along with the fuel lines will hold petrol in them so be careful no to spill any petrol in the car.

The pic shows the complete fuel pump assembly -

...and the fuel pump with filter attached -

to be continued once i collect my new fuel pump
