Fuel pump might be on the way out, I was going to suggest giving the parcel shelf a tap to try and get it to kick over so you could drive home.
BTW, don't forget to change that fuel filter now you've admitted to being slack and not changing it.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Haha that sounds like a problem we had with my car. The old fuel pump decided to die the day it needed to be dropped off for the turbo work. Engine had spark and would crank over, but wouldn't start. The fuel pump had died on me....After only 195,000kms. The car is only 13 years old aswel...

The wiring under the dashboard is a total shocker.
Before i bought the car the dealer had installed this ducks guts type of alarm..... Its a toatal nightmare under there
I think after the paint job is finally complete it might be time to completely rip it all out & and fit an original wiring harness back in.

should beable to hear the it start it runs for about 15 seconds
if you are in a quite place you can put your hand on the rocker under the door and feel the car hum when the pump runs
if it doesn't run you can ground the pump so it runs and try and start it then this will prove problem with fuel pump!
was it a straight cut off or did it cough a little then stp?
15 seconds?? Is this an NA6 thing, or does your car have a pressure leak?
If you don't hear the fuel pump, check for 12v on the white with red stripe wire. If you do not have 12v there, then your EFI relay is bung. Replacement relays are $11 from AutoOne/similar stores - I know because I had to buy one again recently.
$110 sounds about right. I was quoted $130 by Mazda for one.
When you connected FP and GND in the diagnostic connector, was the ignition on?
Interesting that it started like that but I assume that that was a coincidence, or a problem elsewhere (circuit opening relay perhaps).

Not at first.....I understood that it should bypass everything & give the fuel pump power. ( but i may have missunderstood that too) without turning on the ignition
Once i did turn the ignition to on. I could hear the fuel pump. Unlike the night before. Then i thought ohhhh well....may as well try see what happens.
Then it started.
Then i removed the paper clip....it continued to run.
I stopped it & tried it again. just s straight start without a paper clip.
and so on.....
It all seems very random.
ampz was kind of suggesting a switch may be on the way out as well. But I have absolutley no clue......
to me
Electronics= Greek
and i do apreciate everyones input

Should have had Agro help you then
Next time break down in Perth, i'd have spent all night on the side of the road trying to help you get patchy running rather than force you to leave her parked in some random street.

The street Patchy sletp in is Ok........just not the carpark where she was left during the day. Gets a little lonely there at night. Probably would have been Ok too. The wife freaked. And when the wife freaks.......I say How high would you like me to jump.
Breaking down in Perth? I'd rather be having a drink with you thanks very much.

When I had my Clubman, many years ago, I used to get a very similar problem, in that I would be driving along and the engine would just stop and refuse to start.
Usually, if I left it for a while, I could get it to re-start.
Anyway, this went on for some months and I found out the fuel pump was intermitent, and that a new one was over $600!
I traded the car in for a new one.
A week or so after I traded it, the dealer rang me to ask if it ever stopped for no reason, as his finance manager was driving it, and it kept quitting on him.
I acted dumb.
It could be your fuel pump STM, but for you bank account's sanity, I hope not.

The F/P to gnd short on the diagnostics connector, bypassed the circuit opening relay and grounds the coil for the fuel pump relay (giving the fuel pump power), but this will only happen with the ignition key in the 'on' position (reds). Sorry if i confused you Stefan.
I concur with maybe the fuel pump dying. Or blocked and cutting out.
I had a rodeo ute (Mr Q knows it) which the fuel pump cut out on me in my garage of all places.
I decided to drop the tank and pull the pump out so i could get another, it turned out that the pump had been replaced before, it was just connected with screw connectors
and one of these vibrated loose and come undone!
I soldered and heatshrinked the wiring back together and it ran sweetly for another 30000 Km's until i sold it last year.
I suggest maybe getting another fuel pump relay in case it is flaking out on you and not holding on. The reason i said that is beacuse you still had spark and I would have thought if the circuit opening relay malfunctioned it would disable the coils too.
If you need a hand replacing the fuel pump i can help, but i will be in Melbourne for the next 2 weeks.
Cheers
Nuno

good point Biggus D. I somehow doubt the wife will see it that way

but 1 step closer

eventually All i will have to do is just bolt on the turbo intercooler & ECU & it will all be done. Everything else has been upgraded & strengthened LOL.
maybe i'll just chipp away at it litlle bit at the time. one day she'll just forget to say no.....I hope thats the day i have some cash & something is available.
