You'd want to be pretty brave to keep running it to 8000rpm. I ran my old 1.6L to 7400rpm mostly, did have it set at 7600rpm for a while but trimmed it back for the longer events. I did have a very light flywheel too. Car made bugger all more power above 7250 anyway with the std cams, I simply had it so that I could hold gears a bit longer in certain places. Fixed it by going to slightly taller tyres.

Mazda solids from an NB are a good place to start. Then you need to use a solid lifter camshaft as well. Any good valve springs will do, I use the FM ones with the titanium retainers. A lightened bottom end and better rod and rod bolts will help maintain reliability.

Unless you put in a cam that is suitable for making power up there, it's generally a waste of time and money. That said, my old engine made power up to 8300rpm before it tailed off. 8)
