NA Screamer

Postby DOYLMX5 » Thu Feb 15, 2007 11:11 am

Hi guys,
I was wondering everybody's thoughts on what I should do to modify my engine.
I have had a lot (and I mean A LOT) of people saying I should get a turbo, a few people that have said get a supercharger but something I really like the look and sound of is an NA Screamer. Quad throttle body, cams ECU etc.
What can you guys tell me about it and what is preffered and if anyone has any prices... even better!
Thanks A Bunch

Jason

If money is a concern dont bother with NA.... power is MUCH cheaper with FI mods (turbo/blower)

From what I've seen the biggest problem is B6 and BP's don't like to rev and the oil pump gives up the ghost over 8000rpm or so.

Basically the reason everyone say FI is they are a tough little motor, being they are B6T/BPT with high comp pistons basically but really don't like to rev so much. So the solution is to use more air at lower rev rather than more air at higher revs.

are you serious??
my car hates being any lower than 4 grand...
revs up no worries. I thought that is why everyone loves these engines over the ones in the NB

Not totally true. The oil pump is fine if you shim the relief valve, the main issue is that HLAs lose pressure above around 7800 and don't fully open the valves which is why any decent high reving NA motor must use solid lifters. Once you do that, the oil pump capacity is reclaimed as it doesn't have to pump oil up to fill up the lifters - you you modify the galleries. Plus, removing the oil squirters also gives some more headroom.

These engines can happily rev to 8500rpm if you build them right, light weight and quality components are the key. But, it is a very expensive way to get power. Better off with a turbo - they are too easy nowadays. 8)

Yeah I wasn't really entire sure just seemed to be what people were saying on the US forums. Personally I'd just keep the 7500 limiter and push more boost into it.

So what you are saying is turbo = cheapest + highest power gain.
I have heard of the AVO turbo kits but they are all really expensive from what I have seen.
Anyone know anyone that gets kits for the 1.6?
I don;t really know what I would be looking for but even the bare minimums is probably good enough for me...

I would really like to hear some actually answer the question to this post as to what you could build and provide some specs. I am sick to death of the answer everyone saying 'add a turbo' - a turbo is not the be all of power and is to me a 'cheap fix' bandaid solution.

Having owned a turbo car and dríven many others, they just don't do it for me. I dislike turbo's in the way they deliver their power and anyone who has dríven a well setup N/A car can vouch how good they really are.

if you want a NA screamer get a NB 1800 engine and shave the head, fit cams,ECU and quad throttle bodies.....the '98+ NB heads flow much better than the earlier ones.
iwouldnt bother \"building\" a 1600 up for a NA application.

hey do you have to do anything for the valve clearance on the NB motor when you shave the head or does it depend on how much you shave it. if not what is a safe amount, a couple of mm?
