Problem solved, at least it seems.
New set of plugs and leads.
When changing over, it was discovered that there was corrosion on connector to the coil pack for the cylinder with the second shortest lead. A quick clean of the offending connector on the coil pack with a drill bit at slow speed and the abovementioned new items, and it appears that the issue has gone away.
So pleasant to have smooth acceleration again even when cold.
