Cheap increased Spark?

Postby Sean » Sun Feb 11, 2007 1:12 am

Hi All,

I'm finally starting to have the ignition problems everyone told me I would have back when it made 200hp

Anyway, I'm thinking I might have a simple fix....

Apparently a big problem with the ignition on the NA 1.6 is that there is a long distance betwee the igniter and the coils.

I'm thinking if I can re rout 6 wires (easy as pie) and move the igniter closer to teh coils then I can run ultra short wires from the igniter to the coild and perhaps pick up a stronger spark.\
Any ideas?

No idea on your suggestion, but i think there is a GM upgrade on the coils outlined somewhere on m.net. They are supposed to be a much better spark..

If the Microtech has a rpm signal straight from the ECU then you can use that for you rpm gauge and then run two VB921 ignition coil drivers instead of the factory ignitor. The VB921's can be placed right next to the coils if you want, they work well and they are really cheap.

Nice once Steve, do you have a local supplier?

I'm still wondering if moving it all closer will helpthough...

I think that's the coil pack. Either way it's just the generic MSD coils, can be had to a good price and work well. If you're interested I'll get more info, mate is about to use a setup like this on a 400rwhp skyline setup. Good price setup and you'll never have another spark problem I'd say if installed correct.

And if give you a two-step amongst other things. :D

can you just adjust yr spark gap? or at lest check that it is set correctly.

In general terms, the bigger the gap, the more hp you will make, and mroe efficient the engine will be, but the plugs need to be gapped so close now simply becuase the ignition canot supply them enough juice to jump the big gap...

Bosch Australia make individual coils that are popular all over the world for EVOs and WRXs. You use one per plug and place then as close as possible to the plug, giving a really short HT lead. About $50 each. Can't remember the type - just check the WRX forums searching for Bosch and coilpack.

I've investigated the bosch coils, problem is they like to have a hell of a lot of dwell and out little wastespark system is incapable of supplying enouhg dwell at high RPM to keep up to teh demands of these coils.

Ideally I would use 4 bosch coils with a 4 channel ignighter, but I was looking for an easy way out.

MSD is certainly the easy way out. :) Just loves wastespark :D

Actually otherwise there is a bitsa you can put together from mitsubishi parts that is supposed to work well. Can get info if you are interested.

Definaltely interested mate.

See teh basics are that I can go to teh new Microtech ECU and a X4 4 channel ignition box with bosch coild for a REALLY good price, but then I'd need to do a whole lot of rewiring - I'd prefer to stay simple and keep the wiring work to a minimum...

X3 Excel wastespark coils and ignitors are identical to Evo 3 Coils and Ignitors and are supposed to be good for 300kw @ the wheels.

Evo 3 will be rather rare and hard to get but X3 Excel should be easy as. Just go pilfer the system from a wrecker.

Just go a CDI system like I have just installed....(not sure yet if it has made any difference)

On mine I am/was using the ltx-12 with 4 Bosch HEC715 coils and they were good for 400hp on the 13B (and probably beyond)

You missed the cheap bit 8)

Microteach Globab want me to go to the new ECU and X4 box and are happy to look after me with it, but that means a lot of time with re wiring etc.

I just ripped out all the wiring and the dash in my car as I trun it into a full time drag car....

I cant believe how much wiring there is for such a small car.

Hahaha, Same thing just happened to the Cressida (shane's one). It's on a diet bigtime as it was way over the class minimum weight... Anything not required to get it down the track or to meet class rules is either gone or going soon. I think at last count it had lost 180kg.

The Fonz is looking to run it hard off the line come the 10th, but needs to be careful to not dip into teh nines just yet, as he hasn't got a chute or front half cage organised...
