What tyres to get

Currently have mx5 1989 NA 1.6 litre . Tyres on car 195/50/R 15 28 V

Tyres on front Pirelli P6000 wearing evenly, good tread

On back: one side Federal tyre, SImex other side.

Both back tyres are wearing too much on the inside.

Recommendations.

I wouldn't go mismatched tyres if I were you...simply because of the safety aspect. That's not even getting onto performance side of things.

But as many more knowledgeable folks have mentioned, good tyre to get would be either Michelin Pilot Preceda II's, or Toyo T1R's. Personally I was going to get some T1R's but it was when the whole of Australia had no stock. I opted instead for the Toyo Proxes 4's, which have been on the car for a few months now and are proving very very good.

Goodyear eagle F1 GSD 3's or toyo T1-R's would be my pick.

I fitted some T1-R's to a mates car recently. The size was 205/50r16's to a celica group-A and for a set of 4 with a balance it cost $748. Damn good price I thought. Ive dríven the car before and after, and the tyres have made a HUGE difference.

Just spoke to another mx5 owner who has toyo t1-r's on his car and he is very happy with them. I, am leaning towards toyos.

my new wheels were dropped off at bob janes today to get the the yokohama c-drive 195/50/15's ftted to them .
will give you my impressions in a few days .

The jury's still out on the T1-Rs for me.
I've bumped the pressure up to 34psi to get rid of the sloppy feeling. This inturn has increase tyre noise and reduced ride comfort.
I find compared to the Michelin that the tyre sounds like it is working really hard to make it through the corner. The tyre blocks seem to really be squirming and fighting for grip.
Times at Wakefield next month will indicate if it is a comparable tyre, grip wise, to the Michelin or not. At this stage I have my doubts.

Novice1, looks like you need a good wheel alignment, especially your rear camber. As for your tyres, why not just get two Pirellis to match the fronts. Cheaper option. Change all four when the Pirellis wear out.

yep that's what i did last time, just changed the backs, then got an alignment.

What price the yokohamas?

I can get Pirelli 6000 195/50/15 from bob jane for $150 each.

Though i agree, does need a wheel alignment.
Have ordered two pirelli 6000's for the back and as u say change tyres when all four wear out.

How can you say you're not due an alignment for another 4K?
Your inside rears are wearing, you need a camber adjustment, ie a wheel alignment.

Cripes my MX-5 has just clicked over 31K. It has had many, many alignments (probably 5) over the last 15 months, all in the pursuit of better handling of course and after Wakefield next month it's in for another to take off some camber, so get yourself down to a good alignment shop and get a quality alignment done. You won’t be disappointed.

Car had wheel alignment only 1000 kms ago by previous owner.
I, have barely dríven the car since buying it, so tyre wear is not attributable to moi.
Re alignment I agree, only hope bob jane do a good job with wheel alignment.

i have seen other people mention $135 per corner on here, but the guy at bob jane reckons the wholesale price went up a bit recently. i wasn't gonna argue over $20.

Don't go the tyre shop alignment. The MX5 is not like a Commodore. It's a waste of money, even if you're not going to put it on the track. Take it to a specialist sports/racing suspension shop. There plenty of members' opinions about good workshops if you just search through this site.
