as per PM request here is how i mounted the tweeters.. all you have to do is use the hole saw in the door frame for the tweeter to sit in.. makes it nice and flush

if there isnt too much to it, i will get me some splits and get em in next pay...

will probably stick with the jaycar themeand go either the 6 or 6.5\" splits.

no worries.. yeah i got the 6.5 fusions in mine.. i think having a bit of treble higher up in the door makes a difference..

its worth it in the long run..

after having removed my tweeters from the A frame and living with regular speakers in the door and parcel shelf for a few days now, i gotta say i don't miss the tweeters. i think they probably did sound a tiny bit better, but very hard to tell the difference really. but i am much happier with the look of my interior now, without the tweeters fitted. so all up i'm much happpier without them. i guess it just comes down to personal taste / preference.

I am not too fussed on how it looks, but having said that, i would like it to look as stock as possible.

if i can get a decent, cheap set of splits (is that even possible??) i might do it, failing that, just a standard set of coaxials i guess..

The coaxials would make the install easier and allow it to look stock as a rock as opposed to having to mount the tweeters etc but if i wont get that much of an improvement over what is already there... is it worth it?

well you can have mine for say , $80 ? if ya want.

they work fine , as i said the only reason i replaced them was for aesthetic reasons.

they are jensen splits. i don't know much about them, other than the fact that jensen has a huge rep for guitar speakers (both my fender guitar amps have jensens and they sound fan-farkin-tastic). i don't know if that rep carries over into car audio but yeah, in my world jensen is good.

I replaced mine (imported V-spec) with one 4\" and one tweeter in each headrest - I was a bit worried about overloading the head unit and decided this gives the best compromise.......given the speakers are around the base of my neck they work well enough

Well it's just that for ultimate sound quality, headrest speakers are in a very poor location. Ever sat with your back to the stage at a concert? Not quite the same A high quality set of door speakers with amp to power them will outperform the need for headrest speakers, in any car.

I had 6.5 inch splits in both my NA's, powered by a 90w per channel amp, and never needed to have the volume above about 60%. Sounded fantastic, and had very good bass also. Never felt like I needed more volume. It can be done folks, and these days it's much cheaper than even 5 years ago.

You'll never get "ultimate sound quality" in a convertible. It's just never going to happen. Most of those high frequency sounds are going to piss off into the cabin wind noise. Which is where headrest speakers come into the picture...

I've currently got the Jaycar Kevlar splits in the doors, 4x4" speakers in the headrests, an 8" sub in a fibreglass box in the parcel shelf, and a 4x75W Alpine amp. A lot of other car sound systems will piss on what I've set up, but for the price and considering I'm doing this in a convertible, I think it's pretty cool.

My problem is finding an amp with enough channels, and getting an NB interior so that I have somewhere decent and non-destructive to mount the tweeters and subsequently use the crossovers.

The system generally sounded like sh*t, but a lot of tweaking of the amp settings has finally found something listenable. I'll be upgrading the sub in the future, and probably adding a second one. At the same time the amp will also be getting upgraded, and the NB interior put in.. therefore the tweeters and crossovers... phew.

I love my music, but i have headphones and a home system to listen to for that.

i definately agree though, we really are pushing sh*t up a hill with a sharp stick trying to get anything better than mediocre performancce from an open topped car(especially if you have an intake poking thru your firewall!)

leaning more towards just a standard set of 6-6.5's due to not wanting to butcher the trim and ease of install.

I understand that it wont be as good to listen to, but everthing is a tradeoff i guess..

I would tend to agree jules, however, i am certain that he has also spent a considerable amount more money than i am willing to!

i guess i want something minimum fuss and cost, without having to butcher the interior (too much!)

Mine's a pretty budget system. Splits $150, amp $250, headrest speakers $100, sub $125. Plus a home made fibreglass sub box for the parcel shelf.

apart from the head deck (which was a gift) i have so far spent $50 on the two pairs of headrest speakers!

I can see that it is quite a budget system.. for me, think... shoestring!

Budget! I spent $25 on a pair of 4\" speakers and nothing for an old pair of tweeters replace the blown units in my NA
The 4\" are the 'outer' speakers and tweeters 'inner' speakers so I'm not trying to overdrive the (4 speaker output) replacement head unit.

Pretty happy with the result - door speakers do most of the work anyway!

i did mine on the cheap as well. i've got 6\" speakers in the door, some jap brand that the car had already. i've put 2 4\" 50W speakers in each headrest and replaced the headunit (<=not so cheap!)
headrest speakers cost me a total of $40 for 4. quality litterally goes out the roof so i just went for enough to hear whats playing. most of the time i leave the passenger headrest unplugged anyway.
i really couldn't tell the difference that much except for the whole surround thing you get from a tintop car.
much better than the original 5W speakers. lol
