sorry mate, another forumite has first dibs on this one. BUT if you supply me with a dfa kit and a slab of carlton draught, i'll have you up and running in no time

we can use my hand controller and airflow meter to tune it. with me in the passenger seat it'll take about half an hour to tune.

Yaaaaay....Its all up and running!!

I went out late yesterday and got myself a digital multimeter, and calibrated it spot on to 0-5v, plugged it all in today, and its working fine.

At idle the load point sits on about 34-35, and at rev limiter the loadpoint is at 96-97.. :D

Heres a pic at idle..

Now that its all running sweet, could someone recommend a place in Melbourne to get it tuned..

I was looking at taking it down to get tuned in the next week or soo, and if anyone knows of a good tuner that has tuned with a DFA before, that would be great.

thanks heaps for the help.

Cheers
Ryan

to tune

he tuned his own... don't know how accurate it is...

all you need is to get it on the rollers and have a afm at the end of it to lean out or enrich to the right ratios... it shoudln't cost much to get a couple of runs on there...

$180 was my fee but im sure yo can go cheaper

that's great to hear that you got it running. i don't know any suitable dyno's tho sorry. i just tuned mine myself by watching my air / fuel meter and doing loops of the on ramps at edgars rd and plenty rd, on the western ring rd . give it a blast at wot on the on ramp at edgars rd, turn off freeway at next exit, adjust dfa. give it a blast at wot on the on ramp at plenty rd, turn off freeway again. adjust dfa. give it a blast at the on ramp at edgars rd again...so on and so forth around a few times til i had it sorted.
but yeah a dyno would give much better results i'm sure. i didn't bother with a dyno tune tho as i figure it would be a waste of money as this is a stop gap measure til i get my turbo sorted. once the turbo is on, i will dyno the car for best results.

but using this dodgy method i took my mixtures from being pretty much constantly in the \"rich\" range on my afm (while under high load) down to about midway on the \"normal\" range. i did not try to get it too far towards \"lean\" because my afm is simply not accurate enough , and i figured it wasn't worth the risk. but yeah, i certainly noticed a good increase in power (based on my \"seat of pants dyno\" ) and fuel economy (based on litres per 100km - which i did measure before and after).

i had to repeat this procedure again once i fitted my big injectors. actually that was when i realised the power of the dfa. my car was basically undrivable with the big injectors before tuning. now it runs like as good as before, except for a bit of an idle dip which i'm hoping can be sorted out tomorrow when i get my car serviced at max kirwans here in preston ( hopefully Al will give me a club discount even tho i'm not officially a member yet - i will be taking my completed member application forms to him when i drop the car off :D )

long post, but hopefully this addresses everything.

My Clubman's booked in on the dyno at 1:30, so ill let you know how it all goes.

The dude had never seen a DFA before, and he seemed pretty interested in how it all works. He has tuned heaps of safc's, and other comps before, so he seems pretty confident. He asked me to leave the Silicone Chip magazine, so he could have a read through it, and see how it all works and what its all capable of..

Cant wait..

Just got home.... What can i say other than.... F&@KIN SH%T...!!!!

I just wasted $100, and an hour of time... For absolutly nothing..

I went to Auto Test in Eltham, and they put my MX5 on the dyno. The guy had no idea what was going, he didnt read the magazine, and spent about 15 minutes trying to get the dyno to work.. and after 2 runs on the dyno, and alot of problems later (him not knowing how the dfa works) he said that the dfa is basically crap, and will take him hours to dyno correctly.

All he did on the first run, was increase all the outputs in the rev range by 1, and see if that did anything (he said my car was running a little lean). Then on the second run, he put all the outputs up to 4. That gave me more power (82rwkw up from 74rwkw), but the power curve is not smooth at all, its all jumpy.. Then he goes \"that should be ok, that'll be $100\" :?

He said that it's just too hard to tune, as it dosent have a memory function, and that for him to tune it'll be to expensive. He said for me to goto jaycar, and get a air/fuel, and tune it myself.

I was soo ticked off, I even laughed when he asked for $100.

Basically, goto someone who has worked with DFA's before, otherwise you might as well come to my house, sit and let your car idle for an hour. Then i will put all your outputs up by 4, then you give me $100..

Im sure tuned correctly it'll do alot more, im just too pissed off at the moment..

Ouch
That's a disappointment an a half but you'll work it out.
Fatty's method seems interesting, especially if you tried it on the long ascent from Toolern Vale to Gisborne.
Moving along.....Could you clarify something for me? You said "the power curve is not smooth"

is that the shape on the dyno read out or a seat of the pants/driving impression?
