Headrest Speakers

i have a set behind the seats on the parcel shelf, i find this works really well. i never have any trouble getting enough volume and i'm not running a seperate amp.

How did you mount them? I'm considering doing this, but want a bit more info about it ie what needs to be taken up carpet wise, and what needs to be cut through etc.

Thanks for the shots though. They do add to the knowledge. I'm still thinking behind the seats themselves so they're facing in towards the cabin is a good option, but just need to think about what's involved in terms of cutting. Don't wanna butcher the MX too much...

Well it's just that for ultimate sound quality, headrest speakers are in a very poor location. Ever sat with your back to the stage at a concert? Not quite the same A high quality set of door speakers with amp to power them will outperform the need for headrest speakers, in any car.

I couldn't agree with NMX516 more here. Even with 4" speakers in the headrest, you will have high and some mid frequency sound coming from six inches behind your head. IMO that is not a pleasant listening experience. In my old NA I replaced the headrest speakers with reasonable quality 3 1/2" ones and I hated them. Having high frequencies coming from behind you and so close to your head is just not pleasant.

I think the best system for an mx is a set of quality 6 1/2" splits in the doors running off a reasonable amp. Still fairly cheap, with good clear sound coming from the right area. You don't need rear fill speakers on the parcel shelf as the cabin is so small and most of the sound from behind you is lost with wind noise.

So I vote 1 no headrest speakers!

Umm, sorry, but that's not them. Mine are small drivers. I'll have a look for the details. I only had to trim a bit of foam and mounted them to the plastic grill in the headrest. Took about 45mins each side to do. Very easy.

cos that is only a woofer. it does go up to 10Khz, but...

Actually, they're not the ones I used in my NA. The ones I had looked the same but were 3\" and they worked really well.

To all you guys fitting 2 4\" speakers in your headrests, I hope you are keeping the white plastic thing in the headrest or in the event of a rear end crash you will end up with the imprint of 2 speakers in the back of you head.

Funny... I never noticed that link from miata.net under the audio section? Oh well. Will give it a read when I have some time on a weekend and maybe do a trial run stripping everything out and testing locations etc.

Well, i just finished fitting a pair of jaycar 4's into each headrest . i havent taken it for a spin yet, but the sound quality improvement is HUGE!

cant wait to take it for a spin later and see how much difference there is at 100k with the roof down..

6 or 6.5\" splits next on the list... how/where have people mounted the tweeters from such a system? when you say the 'A' pillar, in the corner of the dash, low, mid high? and tips or pointers?

with the tweeters i actually mounted mine in the door frame.. it was a bit time consuming job but i positioned them in the top of the door (the panel that sticks out from the rest.. i used a hole drill bit (i dont know technical name) and drilled a neat whole in the vinyl and into the door frame itself (it doesnt affect anything structual).. this is so the back of the tweeter and magnet sit flush in the door..

i was told my fuel tank was below that so you couldnt cut into it..?..

is this the case in any models.. is there anything under that rear parcel tray

There is enough room to mount 2 8\" shallow speakers with small magnets in the parcel tray. The magnets end up in the tunnels on either side of the fuel tank. like in the pic above. The round red bulgy thing to the left in the pic is the fuel tank cover. If you look under the parcel tray carpet you wil see a shiney silver piece of tin. You can mount your speakers into the silver stuff . The body coloured metal in the middle is the fuel tank cover. Dont cut holes into that.
