very interested in your thoughts on the adaptronic when you get it in.

looks like a nice bit of kit. very good value, and aussie made.

Hi Chris,

what size intercooler did you go with?

did you get it from
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CoolingPro-550x1 ... dZViewItem

My concern is, if going for a much larger intercooler, is the supposed turbo lag and the decrease in air flow to the radiator (as you experienced). I have an SE, and dont want to invert the i/c as you have done.

Your thoughts

We bolt on the hardtop so they don’t come off. We had one car hit the wall at O/Park coming onto the straight and both r/h clips released. Although they don’t offer a great deal of protection we like them to stay with the car for as long as possible. I have seen other hardtops come loose so we like to be extra sure.

Intercooler we got was CoolingPro 550x140x65 INTERCOOLER WITH 2.25 INCH INLETS from JustJap. The guys there are great to deal with and always happy to help. They have a huge number of intercoolers to choose from and I’m sure you will find one that suits. Buy direct from them not via Ebay and the $$ might be a little better.

We are up in the high rev range so turbo lag is not really of concern. We also aim to run 10 pound of boost. For normal day to day driving I don’t believe you will have an overheating problem. We experienced some high summer temps which was good to see the worst case from our point of view. I think for us the next test will be E/Creek on a 35+ day as this is usually where they get the hottest. We will tune it nice and fat in the top end as an extra precaution.

That intercooler suits the SE so well.

May I ask, why do you use an Oz complianed SE for racing? Is it in the rules? Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy an import?

Hi all,

The intercoolers are great value for money. They are quite heavy compared to some of the other available but very strong. Great for those times when you find yourself buried in the kitty litter  or have a late braking lunge that seemed like a good idea at the time

We did not set out to get an Aust complied car, it just came up at a good price. This is the first one of our race cars that is an Aust car; all the others are imports. We have imported one other SE for racing and we actually have another one on the water now.

In Japan they are quite an expensive car with 3 recently passing in at auction for over 1.8 million yen. (nearly AU$20,000). By the time you add agent fees, auction fees, domestic transport, de-registration, shipping, quarantine, GST and duty (plus a few other $$ here and there) it quickly ad’s up.

By the way we have just got the roll cage fitted and details can be found here -

Chris.

hey chris just wondering if this cage is pretty much the same as the bolt in ones that were in the NB8A's last mx5 club track day late last year?

if so any chance of a rough price on a removable one?

Hi all,

Yes we are very happy with the cage. Andrew, they are similar to the ones in our 3 NB8's except this time they are fully welded The other 3 have welded and bolted ones. Our side intrusion bars are higher in the SE as we will run different door trims that don’t have the armrest that interferes with the bar. We have done a fully removable one on a NA that had rear plates that bolted into mounts of the rear rail. This also had an additional 3 inches of height in the main hoop to overcome the “too tall to run” scenario we dealt with at the NSW Supersprint Rounds last year. This was fitted then removed at the circuit and took about 20 minutes each time. The owner was very happy with it and will use it again this year. The cost for a similar set up would be from $1100.

We start work on the engine tune with the Adaptronic ECU so I will keep you all posted.

Thanks again for all your emails.

Chris.

who would i talk to about getting one of the removable jobbies made up for my NB8A then? if it only takes 20min or so ill do what the other person you have mentioned dose and just install it track side on the day as well as a race seat which ill bolt straight to the floor or on some low set brackets.
