Headrest Speakers

I have a small Pioneer 2 channel amp in my drivers side tunnel. It's been there for over 3 years without any problems. There's 2 advantages mounting it there, it's stealth and doesn't take up any boot space. The disadvantage is that you are limited to only a few amps that are small enough to fit there.

I can’t believe the number of posts here saying forget the head rest speakers.
They are without doubt the best system in an open top car around. Sure you only get mid & high range frequencies but the door speakers fill in the bass.
With the NA and all its associated wind noise on the freeway go out and find a reasonable set of 3” or 3.5” speakers and don’t forget the passenger seat, you won’t regret it.

Here, here. I would have changed the seats years ago to NB one's if it weren't for my beloved Jaycar headrest speakers.

i have to disagree with that. the first mx5 i ever rode in had the headrest speakers and i thought they sounded tinny and horrible. couldn't hear any bass from the door speakers at all.

of course this might have just been due to the way he had the stereo settings dialled in.

also i just don't like the idea of having speakers so close to my ears. i have a set behind the seats on the parcel shelf, i find this works really well. i never have any trouble getting enough volume and i'm not running a seperate amp.

I just have a pair of 4\" JVC speakers in each head rest, cut out a bunch of foam to make them fit. *shrugs* works fine for me combining with the doors.

fatty - its not 2 bad with a 4\" in it... the leather muffles alot of the sound bringing it down quite a few levels.. just enough to blend with the front splits..

WHERE ARE THE REAR SPEAKERS IN CARS THAT DONT HAVE HEADREST ONES...

my cousin has a black 93.. and hit has little 8\" subs mounted in the base of the seats facing the floor.. but i doubt that was stock lol

Remember to test the polarity too when you wire them in, apparently some were installed incorrectly from the factory.

if they are, i will do them both, matching pair kinda thing..

Std NA door speakers are either 6 inch or 6.5 inch, can't remember which exactly. I had 6.5 inch ones mounted in mine, without any mods to the door or trim etc. Jaycar do some pretty good co-axial 6.5 inch speakers....

They are a 6 inch with a 3 screw mounting system from memory but I think I wedged some 6 1/2's into mine.

Well it's just that for ultimate sound quality, headrest speakers are in a very poor location. Ever sat with your back to the stage at a concert? Not quite the same A high quality set of door speakers with amp to power them will outperform the need for headrest speakers, in any car.

I had 6.5 inch splits in both my NA's, powered by a 90w per channel amp, and never needed to have the volume above about 60%. Sounded fantastic, and had very good bass also. Never felt like I needed more volume. It can be done folks, and these days it's much cheaper than even 5 years ago.
